[EDITOR’S NOTE: Welcome to Clix-Mas 2017, wherein we here at Critical Missives rather foolishly try to provide you with twelve different articles in twelve days, all brought to you by either the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, or the Ghost of Christmas Future! Upcoming Games: Heroclix: The Gathering: Month 4: Rise of the Eldrazi!!

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the fourth in a quick series of local game announcements for SouthEast Michigan Clix’ers before we go back to our regular programming!! We’re running a Scenario called Heroclix: The Gathering, obviously inspired by the eternally popular CCG Magic: The Gathering. Each month is based–very loosely–off of an existing Magic expansion. We then weave everything together with an ever-evolving narrative that changes based on the results of our local tournaments. Think of this as a “What If” Magic: The Gathering story told through Heroclix! Read about the Month One posting here, the Month Two scenario here, and the Month Three game here!]

ELDRAZI EMRAKUL 1

Welcome to Month Four of Heroclix: The Gathering!! Before we get into what’s happening this Month, let’s review everything that has happened in our story so far…

HEROCLIX: THE GATHERING: MONTH THREE: TIME SPIRAL!!

The Guildpact has been shattered. Ravnica has been torn apart from the inside by the machinations of its Guild Paruns (notably Szadek of House Dimir) and their ever escalating intrigues. But the shattering of the Guildpact also attracted the attention of the predatory plane of New Phyrexia, who opened portals to Ravnica in pursuit of conquest and resources.

New Phyrexia invasion 2

As the Phyrexian legions pour in, Compleation seemed inevitable for the Ravnicans until Momir Vig, Simic Guildmaster, unveiled his secret weapon:  Experiment Kraj, a gigantic, mutated Ooze.

Experiment Kraj

Kraj rolled through the City, absorbing Ravnican and Phyrexian alike, until the initial Phyrexian invaders were forced to retreat. Reasoning that a Second Wave of Phyrexian invaders was all but assured to wipe them out, the surviving Paruns of Ravnica regrouped in the vast smoldering ruin of the Azorius Senate, where they came up with the dangerous idea of summoning a powerful temporal storm called a Time Spiral to spirit Ravnican warriors of both the past and the future into their present timeline to help their cause…

Day's Undoing

Their gambit worked. The Phyrexians have been defeated by the heroes of Ravnica’s past and future, and Szadek slew their champion, Glissa the Traitor. The demon Rakdos used an ancient spell to seal off the Phyrexian portals, and the threat of Compleation is now over.

HEROCLIX: THE GATHERING: MONTH FOUR: RISE OF THE ELDRAZI!!

Rise of the Eldrazi 2.jpg

Except… actions have consequences, and the sundering of the Guildpact combined with the ripping of time itself have now brought the Ravnican plane to the attention of the Old Gods known now as the Eldrazi, once thought to be locked away in the prison plane of Zendikar.

But the Eldrazi are native to the Blind Eternities, the space between planes, and what was once their prison is now more of a fortress, a stronghold from whence they will pour forth and reclaim their position at the top of the planar hierarchy.

Ulamog avatar.jpg

Many hoped that the triumph of Ravnica over the Phyrexians would usher in a new era of fairness and justice for all. But soon, there will be no “fair.” There will be no “just.” There will only be the will of the Eldrazi.

And they are rising…

Well then!! Hello fellow Clixers, and welcome to the fourth and FINAL Month of Heroclix: The Gathering, exclusiviely at Comics & More in Madison Heights, MI!!

Month One ended with Roberto Ty piloting a House Dimir team to victory (with noted Spy Nick Fury standing in for Szadek!), which is why House Dimir came out on tops in our Month One recap story.

However, in Month Two, Matthew Wenderski used a Simic Combine squad to triumph over all comers, resulting in Momir Vig saving the day in that chapter.

Matt won again in Month Three, but now everyone will face the doom of the Eldrazi in Month Four as we play out the final battle for Ravnica!

But before we get to this Month’s Build, let’s have a look at the Scoreboard!

Again, to review, each competitor scored Tournament Points as follows:

Showing Up: 1 Tournament Point

Match Loss or Tie: 1 Tournament Point

Match Win: 2 Tournament Points

Event Win: 3 Tournament Points

And now, for this week’s Build!!

The Game: Heroclix: The Gathering: Month 4: Rise of the Eldrazi!

Entry Fee: $5

Prizes: It’s Month Four, so there will be a bunch of prizes of all sorts!! Some will be hella sweet, some will be really stupid, but we are going to have us some fun!!

The Build: 600 Points (an even bigger conflict means even bigger armies!!), GOLDEN AGE, No Tactics (No Resources, ATA’s or Relics.)

No figure larger than a peanut base (UNLESS YOU ARE PLAYING ELDRAZI!! See the Eldrazi entry for more details).

No Call-Ins.

Possession pieces are okay to play. (Basically the Heroclix version of an Aura Enchantment, right?)

You must choose a Guild or other faction from the chart below. Once you’ve chosen, your army must be built around the generic keyword pairings associated with that Guild or faction. This means that everyone on your force must have at least ONE of the two generic keywords listed.

All characters friendly to your force can use the associated Guild Team Ability (GTA) or Faction Team Ability (FTA).

NOTE: After the sundering of the Guildpact at the end of Month One, the Guild Team Abilities are all your figures have to fall back on. This means that ANY OTHER TEAM ABILITY POSSESSED BY YOUR PIECES CANNOT BE USED. Note that characters still POSSESS whatever Team Abilities are printed on their base and card; they just cannot USE them.

List of Ravnica Guilds (Guild descriptions provided by MTGSalvation.com):

azorius

AZORIUS SENATE

The Azorius Senate functions as the government of Ravnica and creates Ravnican laws.

Keywords:  PoliticianRuler

Azorius Senate Team AbilityAt the beginning of the game, place an Immunity token on the character card of one character with the highest point value of those using this team ability. When a character with an Immunity token is within 8 squares of an opposing character’s starting area and is dealt damage, it may be given an action token to remove the Immunity token from its card and ignore the damage dealt. When a character with the Immunity token on its card is KO’d, you may place the Immunity token on the card of the remaining character on your force that is the highest point character that can use the team ability.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: The Azorius Senate was all but destroyed following the events of Month One. Their leader, Augustin IV was murdered and their guild hall was decimated. They are still rebuilding. Therefore, the Azorius Senate MAY NOT BE CHOSEN for Month Four builds.

boros-legion

BOROS LEGION

Ravnica’s security force, the Boros Legion is both Ravnica’s constabulary and standing army. The Boros suffered a terrible blow when their Parun, Razia, was killed in battle, but another angel, Feather, has rallied the Legion back into battle readiness. The Eldrazi are coming, and its all hands on deck.

Keywords:  Police, Soldier

Boros Legion Team AbilityAdjacent friendly characters modify their range values by +1. When a character using this Team Ability is adjacent to a friendly character making a ranged combat attack, modify the target’s defense value by -1 if the target is within line of fire of this character.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: Feather hasn’t just revived the Boros Legion, she’s slightly upgraded their capabilities. Note that adjacent friendly characters now modify their range values by +1 in addition to the previous effects of the Boros Legion Team Ability.

house-dimir

HOUSE DIMIR

In practice, little information on the Dimir is known. It is, however, known that the Dimir are involved in assassinations, criminal activity, and espionage on a contractual basis.

Szadek has led his House to victory, but the celebration is short lived. Even if he can muster enough strength to repel the invaders, the other guilds may use this new conflict as an opportunity to take back what was taken from them.

While subtlety will always be the primary tactic of House Dimir, the time has come to step out from the shadows and remind everyone why they should be afraid of what stirs in the night…

Keywords:  Spy, Assassin

House Dimir Team Ability: A character using this team ability can’t have their defense power countered if they occupy the lowest elevation of terrain.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: The House Dimir Team Ability has not changed since its revision in Month Two. While their presence in the shadows of Ravnica is now common knowledge, they are still very hard to deal with if encountered on their home turf–Ravnica’s sewers and Underbelly…

golgari-swarm

GOLGARI SWARM

Denizens of Ravnica’s agricultural and waste management sectors. Run by Gorgon sisters. And creepy fungal sewer monsters.

Keywords: Monster, Assassin

Golgari Swarm Team Ability: Characters using this team ability can use Stealth on their starting click. If that character can already use Stealth on their starting click, lines of fire may not be drawn to that character by opposing characters while on that click.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to Golgari Swarm.

gruul-clans

GRUUL CLANS

Ravnica’s foresters, gamekeepers, park rangers, wildlife officers, and wildskeepers. But with the wilds declining, the role of the Clans has also diminished, and many Gruul Clans members have adopted an anarcho-primitivist ideology and become Ravnica’s defenders of nature, intent on destroying civilization.

Keywords: Animal, Brute

Gruul Clans Team AbilityAll successful attacks made by a character using this Team Ability generate knock back. Knock back generated by a character using this Team Ability cannot be ignored.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to Gruul Clans.

izzet-league

IZZET LEAGUE

Ravnica’s formative and physical scientists and engineers. The Izzet League are known to perform magical experiments, ever with reckless abandon and sometimes with spectacular but severe results.

Keywords: Scientist, Mystical

Izzet League Team AbilityWhen a character using the Izzet League Team Ability takes damage from an attack, roll a d6 that can’t be rerolled and consult the chart below for the resulting effect.

1: This character takes 1 additional unavoidable damage and gets an action token after actions resolve.

2: This character takes 1 additional unavoidable damage.

3-4: The attacker is dealt 1 unavoidable damage.

5: The attacker is dealt 1 unavoidable damage and gets an additional action token after actions resolve (if able).

6: The attacker is dealt 2 unavoidable damage.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to Izzet League. Once normal Mystics was turned off, this GTA worked extremely well (instead of being EXTREMELY overpowered).

orzhov-syndicate

ORZHOV SYNDICATE

Nearly every business in Ravnica ties back to the Orzhov in some devious way or another. Whilst they bear the facade of a religious group and may well have been a true faith at the signing of the Guildpact, they now worship only profit and power.

Keywords: Mystical, Politician

Orzhov Syndicate Team AbilityCharacters using this Team Ability can’t be the target of an opponent’s Outwit or Perplex unless they’ve been targeted with an attack previously in the same turn.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to Orzhov.

rakdos

CULT OF RAKDOS

Founded by Parun Rakdos, an ancient demon, the Cult of Rakdos attend to menial labor and the services industry, which includes some less-than-savory offerings, such as assassination, as well as more agreeable ones, such as the catering (i.e., food service) and entertainment industries.

Using the strife of the end of the Guildpact as a distraction, acolytes of Rakdos have finally managed to raise their Parun from the depths of darkness and despair. But will Rakdos choose to fight the invaders or decide to use this opportunity to thwart Szadek and seize Ravnica for his own?

Keywords: Monster, Mystical

Cult of Rakdos Team AbilityWhenever a character using this team ability is KO’d, you may roll a d6 and subtract 2 (minimum 1). Deal that much damage, divided as you choose, among any number of opposing characters adjacent to the square the KO’d character occupied.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to the Team Ability, but please note that the return of the demon Rakdos has slightly altered the Cult of Rakdos keywords. Now a character must have either the Monster or Mystical keyword to be eligible for the Cult of Rakdos (I mean, they just awakened their demon overlord, so, yeah… )

selesnya-conclave

SELESNYA CONCLAVE

Despite their superficial appearance of being a “good” and “peace-loving”, in truth the guild is just as hypocritical and as sinister, if not more so, as other Ravnican guilds. The Selesnya Conclave often employs its quietmen and other members to silence the civilians of Ravnica from up close and wreak havoc.

Keywords: Brute, Spy

Selesnya Conclave Team AbilityWhen characters using this Team Ability roll doubles on a successful close attack roll, that attack generates no knock back; instead, that attack cannot be evaded, damage dealt can’t be reduced below 1 and any hit characters get an action token.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change from Month 2.

simic-combine

SIMIC COMBINE

The original purpose of the Simic Combine was to preserve the health of all Ravnican life-forms. They were devoted to the study of life, medicines, and biomancy. But just as life can adapt, so did the Combine. Momir Vig, the Simic guildmaster, was dissatisfied with this original purpose and formed a new purpose: to improve upon life-forms of Ravnica.

Keywords: Animal, Scientist

Simic Combine Team Ability: At the beginning of your turn, choose one option to last until the end of your turn for all friendly characters using this Team Ability. All friendly characters using this Team Ability ignore Shape Change; or all friendly characters using this Team Ability ignore Stealth this turn.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: The Month 2 change helped this Guild quite a bit (indeed, both players in the Championship game were playing Simic), so it will stay as is for now.

phryexian-mana

NEW PHYREXIA

It came not in the form of a noble struggle, a fair contest of warriors clashing will against will, but as a wave of unstoppable slaughter. Mirran partisans resisted bravely, using their wits and magic to fend off the onslaught that originated from inside their own world. But their efforts were for naught. Phyrexia is victorious. Mirrodin now goes by a different name: New Phyrexia.

And New Phyrexia hungers…

Keywords: Robot, Armor

New Phyrexia Team Ability: Characters using this team ability can use Perplex, but only to target a character with the Armor or Robot keyword. This use of Perplex may not modify damage values, and no character may be targeted by this ability more than twice per turn. This use is in addition to any other uses of Perplex.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: The Phyrexians have finally been defeated! Thus, they can no longer be chosen.

Time Spiral logo

TIME SPIRAL

From Ravnica’s forged Past to its many posssible Futures come the warriors caught in the Time Spiral. But even if they are able to turn the tide of the war with New Phyrexia, what will become of them once the invasion is over? And if the sundering of the Guildpact awakened the interest of New Phyrexia, whose attention might the spiraling of time itself attract?

Now, that question has been answered. The Eldrazi are rising…

Keywords: Past, Future

Time Spiral Team Ability: Characters using this Team Ability may use
Probability Control. When a roll is ignored because of this
team ability an action token must be placed on a friendly
character on the battlefield or the roll is not ignored.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: The time-displaced warriors of Ravnica come packed with the ability to manipulate time itself. No change for Month Four.

Eldrazi Logo

The Eldrazi are gargantuan monstrosities who have transcended the colors of mana as we know them. Native to the Blind Eternities, they are huge and immensely powerful. Confronting them is like confronting the multiverse itself.

Keywords: Deity, Cosmic, Monster

Additional Requirements: Characters who cost less than 100 Points may not be chosen for this faction.

Rise of the Eldrazi Team Ability:  Characters using the Rise of Eldrazi Team Ability can use Willpower and their powers cannot be countered. When you build your force, you may include characters with any size base as long as they still meet the Rise of Eldrazi Keyword Requirements.

Alright! There is your Month Four Scenario! Hope to see everyone at the game! And thanks to everyone who has attended these events (and also to all of you who have left comments about this! If you’ve run this scenario at your local venue, let us know how it went!). It’s been a blast to see such positive responses from you folks!

Upcoming Games: Heroclix: The Gathering: Month 3: Time Spiral!!

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the third in a quick series of local game announcements for SouthEast Michigan Clix’ers before we go back to our regular programming!! We’re running a Scenario called Heroclix: The Gathering, obviously inspired by the eternally popular CCG Magic: The Gathering. Each month is based–very loosely–off of an existing Magic expansion. Time Spiral Two

HEROCLIX: THE GATHERING: MONTH TWO: NEW PHYREXIA!!

The Guildpact has been shattered. Szadek, Parun of the House Dimir, stands triumphant as the supreme leader of Ravnica. Long may he reign…

Except that his ascension and the fall of the Guildpact has attracted the attention of the predatory plane of New Phyrexia, who have opened portals to Ravnica in pursuit of conquest and resources.

New Phyrexia invasion 2

As the Phyrexian legions pour in, the city of Ravnica is quickly overrun. The Boros Legion meets the Phyrexians head on, but their lines are quickly broken and Razia, their angleic Parun, is impaled with her own sword by the leader of the invasion, Praetor Sheoldred.

Razia Falls

But just as Phyrexian Compleation seems inevitable, Momir Vig, Simic Guildmaster, unveils his secret weapon:  Experiment Kraj, a gigantic, mutated Ooze.

Kraj rolls through the City, absorbing Ravnican and Phyrexian alike, until the Phyrexian legions are left decimated and forced to retreat as the surviving Paruns regroup in the vast smoldering ruin of the Azorius Senate…

HEROCLIX: THE GATHERING: MONTH THREE: TIME SPIRAL!!

Day's Undoing

“I thought I might find you here.” Glissa the Traitor flicks her wrist, and behind her bursts a portal to New Phyrexia.

The surviving Paruns react defensively, but Glissa waves them off. “Please,” she smiles, “I’ve not come to fight. I stand before you a humble ambassador.” Her eyes narrow ever so slightly. “With a message.”

“Then speak it and be gone.” The voice of Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Parun of the Izzet League boomed and echoed against the remains of the Senate Chamber.

Glissa 2

“You Ravnicans have done well to defeat our scouting party. Sheoldred in his arrogance believed your plane conquerable with just a tenth of our forces. But your oblivion will not be stopped. Compleation awaits this world,” Glissa takes a step into the portal. “And we will see you soon.”

For a moment, there was silence. Finally Szadek’s rage broke forth.

“We will not stand by and let our city be taken by such filth! I would tear the city of guilds apart before I see it fall to the twisted metal tendrils of New Phyrexia!”

Niv-Mizzet

A puff of fumes erupts from Niv-Mizzet. “And tear it apart you have, little vampire. But what would you do to stop them?”

Momir Vig steps forward. “Perhaps I am being overly analytical, but if The Traitor was being truthful about the size of the next invading force, then perhaps this is not a question of tactics, but one of numbers.”

Szadek directs his gaze to the Simic Guildmaster. “Explain.”

“Given the current state of our houses, not to mention that Boros is all but wiped out, we simply do not have enough warriors to mount anything but a token defense of our land.”

“Obviously. So what do you propose?”

Momir Vig 2

“There is a spell, Szadek. Old magick that predates even you. I doubt any but the ancient Firemind may remember its existence. But recently I encountered records of it in my research. It’s called a Time Twister, and if executed correctly, we could pull the greatest warriors of Ravnica’s established past and possible futures to fight for us in our current, well… present.”

“And if executed incorrectly?”

Niv-Mizzet shifts his weight and lowers his gaze to Vig. “If executed incorrectly, our world will be ripped from the multi-verse and experience temporal folding until we cease to exist. I remember this magick. I also remember why its practice was banned. It is dangerous beyond understanding.”

“Yes,” Vig replied, “but it may also be the only chance we have to survive.”

“Well then… ” Szadek smiled. “It seems we have some work to do.”

Okay!! Hello fellow Clixers, and welcome to Month Three of Heroclix: The Gathering, exclusiviely at Comics & More in Madison Heights, MI!! Month One ended with Roberto Ty piloting a House Dimir team to victory (with noted Spy Nick Fury standing in for Szadek!), which is why House Dimir came out on tops in our Month One recap story.

However, in Month Two, Matthew Wenderski used a Simic Combine squad to triumph over all comers (which is why Momir Vig saves the day in this month’s story!).

But the Phyrexian war machine will not be denied, so the Ravnican Paruns have turned to some dangerous magick! The Past and the Future are merging in the present, so you know what that means. It’s time for:

The Game: Heroclix: The Gathering: Month 3: Time Spiral!

The Build: 500 Points (an even bigger conflict means even bigger armies!!), GOLDEN AGE, No Tactics (No Resources, ATA’s or Relics.)

(Since time itself is being ripped open and the past is once again present, this game is now GOLDEN AGE!!)

And that’s not the only change. Some of the Guilds have had to adapt to their changing environment to survive. And another Guild didn’t make it out of Month Two…

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No changes to the unstoppable New Phyrexia faction. They were a popular choice as well last Month.

Keywords: Past, Future

Time Spiral Team Ability: Characters using this Team Ability may use
Probability Control. When a roll is ignored because of this
team ability an action token must be placed on a friendly
character on the battlefield or the roll is not ignored.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: The latest faction to join the fight, the time-displaced warriors of Ravnica come packed with the ability to manipulate time themselves…

Alright! There is your Month 3 Scenario! Hope to see everyone at the game!

Upcoming Games: Heroclix: The Gathering: Month 2: New Phyrexia!!

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the second in a quick series of local game announcements for SouthEast Michigan Clix’ers before we go back to our regular programming!! Read about the Month One posting here!]

HEROCLIX: THE GATHERING: MONTH ONE: RAVNICA, CITY OF GUILDS!!

AND so it was though nine great guilds battled and intrigued for supremacy of Ravnica, their titanic struggle was but a deception. For there was another great house, a guild that had fallen from the memory of all but a very few, and even then the House Dimir was spoken of only in nervous whispers in back alleyways.

szadek

After lying seemingly dormant and forgotten for more than ten thousand years, Szadek, the vampiric Lord of Secrets and Parun of the House Dimir, finally re-emerged with his faction after he had manipulated his fellow guilds into shattering the Guildpact.

Decimate.jpg

In the chaos that followed, Szadek’s schemes culminated in an attack that left the Azorius Senate guild hall Prahv a smoking crater and their guild leader Augustin IV dead by Szadek’s own hand.

Now House Dimir is whispered about no longer; in fact, they are now the supreme faction on Ravnica…

But the sundering of the Guildpact enchantment that had kept the peace for so long does not come without a price, or unforeseen consequences. Indeed, if one was so attuned, the ripples of such a massive disenchantment could be felt even from another plane…

HEROCLIX: THE GATHERING: MONTH TWO: NEW PHYREXIA!!

New Phryexia.jpg

Across the multi-verse, a vile, oily corruption has taken hold over the metal landscape of what used to be called Mirrodin. What was once machined and precise has been violently twisted into a dark war machine, one with a growing hunger for conquest beyond the borders of its own reality.

Soon, Mirrodin will fall and be resurrected as New Phyrexia, and then its forces will look high and low for other worlds to consume…

And Ravnica has just been noticed.

If the City of Guilds is to survive the coming onslaught, the factions of Ravnica will have to regroup and evolve. For this conflict will not be about the right to rule Ravnica; it will be a fight for its right to exist at all.

Okay!! Hello fellow Clixers, and welcome to Month Two of Heroclix: The Gathering, exclusiviely at Comics & More in Madison Heights, MI!! Month One ended with Roberto Ty piloting a House Dimir team to victory (with noted Spy Nick Fury standing in for Szadek!), which is why House Dimir came out on top in our story.

And those changes aren’t just cosmetic! Roberto’s win has altered the fabric of our game itself! Let’s get to the specifics:

The Game: Heroclix: The Gathering: Month 2: New Phyrexia!

(I think that ties the record we set last month for most colons in a Heroclix Scenario Title!!)

The Build: 400 Points (a bigger conflict means bigger armies!!), Modern Age, No Tactics (No Resources, ATA’s or Relics.)

No figure larger than a peanut base.

NOTE: After the sundering of the Guildpact, the Guild Team Abilities are all your figures have to fall back on. This means that ANY OTHER TEAM ABILITY POSSESSED BY YOUR PIECES CANNOT BE USED. Note that characters still POSSESS whatever Team Abilities are printed on their base and card; they just cannot USE them.

And that’s not the only change. Some of the Guilds have had to adapt to their changing environment to survive. And one Guild didn’t make it out of Month One…

Therefore, the Azorius Senate MAY NOT BE CHOSEN for Month Two builds.

boros-legion

BOROS LEGION

Ravnica’s security force, the Boros Legion is both Ravnica’s constabulary and standing army. Their numbers will be sorely tested when the New Phryexians invade…

Keywords:  Police, Soldier

Boros Legion Team AbilityWhen a character using this Team Ability is adjacent to a friendly character making a ranged combat attack, modify the target’s defense value by -1 if the target is within line of fire of this character.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to the Boros Legion.

house-dimir

GAMEPLAY NOTES: The House Dimir Team Ability has changed.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to Izzet League, although now that normal Mystics is turned off, this should work more as intended (instead of being EXTREMELY overpowered).

orzhov-syndicate

ORZHOV SYNDICATE

Nearly every business in Ravnica ties back to the Orzhov in some devious way or another. Whilst they bear the facade of a religious group and may well have been a true faith at the signing of the Guildpact, they now worship only profit and power.

Keywords: Mystical, Politician

Orzhov Syndicate Team AbilityCharacters using this Team Ability can’t be the target of an opponent’s Outwit or Perplex unless they’ve been targeted with an attack previously in the same turn.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: No change to Orzhov.

Selesnya Conclave Team AbilityWhen characters using this Team Ability roll doubles on a successful close attack roll, that attack generates no knock back; instead, that attack cannot be evaded, damage dealt can’t be reduced below 1 and any hit characters get an action token.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: Very slight change here. Now this Team Ability only activates on a successful CLOSE attack roll. Again, this was done merely to help balance.

simic-combine

SIMIC COMBINE

The original purpose of the Simic Combine was to preserve the health of all Ravnican life-forms. They were devoted to the study of life, medicines, and biomancy. But just as life can adapt, so did the Combine. Momir Vig, the Simic guildmaster, was dissatisfied with this original purpose and formed a new purpose: to improve upon life-forms of Ravnica.

Simic Combine Team Ability: At the beginning of your turn, choose one option to last until the end of your turn for all friendly characters using this Team Ability. All friendly characters using this Team Ability ignore Shape Change; or all friendly characters using this Team Ability ignore Stealth this turn.

GAMEPLAY NOTES: Another slight change to the Team Ability. I don’t think any of our players chose the Simic Combine in Month One, so we’re going to make their Team Ability a little stronger by making it more predictable for the user.

Instead of rolling a d6 and getting nothing half of the time, now the Simic Team Ability splits the ability up  and allows the user to chose whichever effect they want to use that turn.

phryexian-mana

NEW PHYREXIA

Keywords: Robot, Armor

New Phyrexia Team Ability: Characters using this team ability can use Perplex, but only to target a character with the Armor or Robot keyword. This use of Perplex may not modify damage values, and no character may be targeted by this ability more than twice per turn. This use is in addition to any other uses of Perplex.

Upcoming Scenario: Heroclix: The Gathering: Ravnica!!

[UPDATE01/03/2017!! A previous version of this article listed The Cult of Rakdos as having “Brute, Assassin” for their keywords. This should have read “Brute, Mystical.” I am sorry for the misprint! To remedy this, for Month 1, teams made up of Brutes and/or Mystical characters OR teams made up of Brutes and/or Assassins will be allowed to choose The Cult of Rakdos as their guild.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is just a quick local game announcement for SE Michigan Clix’ers before we go back to our regular programming!!]

Okay! We are starting a multi-part proprietary Comics & More Heroclix Scenario based on the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering!

And here it is:

HEROCLIX: THE GATHERING: RAVNICA!!

The Guilds of Ravnica are ten sociopolitical factions that hold power on the city plane of Ravnica. Each guild has its own distinct ideology that unifies its members with one another, with the guild itself, with its functions and purposes, and with its structure.

But unease is starting to grow like wildfire among the locals and lines are being drawn in the sand. If you want to control Ravnica, you’re going to have to choose a faction and fight for it!! But beware… once you choose a home among the ten factions, the other nine are going to try and destroy you!

The Game: Heroclix: The Gathering: Ravnica: Month 1!

(I think that sets a record for most colons in a Heroclix Scenario Title!!)

The Build: 300 Points, Modern Age, No Tactics (No Resources, ATA’s or Relics.)

No figure larger than a peanut base. No Call-Ins. Possession pieces are okay to play.

You must choose a Guild from the chart below. Once you’ve chosen a Guild, your army must be built around the generic keyword pairings from the list below. This means that everyone on your force must have at least ONE of the two generic keywords listed.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: Once again (and this time, with feeling!), we are shamelessly unleashing the 12 Nights of Clix-Mas! Tonight is Night 2! If you missed The First Night of Clix-Mas, you can catch up right here!]

home-for-the-holidays

Welcome back to the 12 Nights of Clix-Mas 2016! This is the Second Night of Clix-Mas, wherein we’ll discuss the next special Scenario we’re running at our local venue Comics & More in Madison Heights, Michigan!

The Game: Home for the Holidays

Entry Fee: $5.00

The Build: 300 Points, Golden Age. MUST BE A NAMED THEMED TEAM!!

The Restrictions: The Possession Mechanic, Call-Ins, Team Bases and Resources and Convention LE Faust are not allowed.

Themed Team rules and ATA‘s ARE allowed. Vehicles and Colossals are allowed, but only if those pieces don’t break your Theme and only if you have at least ONE other standard character on your force as well.

Constructs, Word Ballons, Horde or Bystander Tokens, Special Objects & Relics are only allowed if one of your characters brings them in at the start of the game as part of a Trait or game effect, and only if you pay any associated costs.

The SetupAfter both players have placed their characters, each player (in turn order) designates one standard character on their team as aTRAVELER.”

If a TRAVELER would be KO’d by any game effect, that TRAVELER is instead placed back in its Starting Area at the beginning of its next turn UNLESS it was the last friendly character on its own force.

Once each player has chosen their TRAVELER, each player (in turn order) must choose a HOLIDAY HOST from the Table below. Their TRAVELER gains that host’s corresponding Trait.

Auntie Tana Nile.png

“Auntie” Tana Nile: Give your Traveler a Power Action if that character occupies an opponent’s Starting Area and there are no opposing Drunk Relatives on the board. If you do, until the start of your next turn, friendly characters can use Improved Movement: Ignores Elevated Terrain, Ignores Hindering Terrain, Ignores Characters and opposing characters can’t ignore terrain for movement purposes even if this ability is lost. In addition, friendly characters can use Improved Targeting: Ignores Elevated Terrain, Ignores Hindering Terrain, Ignores Characters and opposing characters can’t ignore terrain for targeting purposes (except via the “Fun Uncle” Arcade ability).

brotherhood

“Evil Unca'” Mags: Give your Traveler a Power Action if that character occupies an opponent’s Starting Area and there are no opposing Drunk Relatives on the board. If you do, choose a square on the map. For each character occupying that square or an adjacent square, roll a d6 that can’t be rerolled. On a result of 4-6, deal those characters 3 damage.

krampus-holiday

“Weird Uncle” KrampusGive your Traveler a Power Action if that character occupies an opponent’s Starting Area and there are no opposing Drunk Relatives on the board. If you do, place an action token on each opposing character that is adjacent to friendly figure. These action tokens will cause pushing damage if a second token is placed and the figure doesn’t have a way to ignore pushing damage (like Willpower).

An opposing character may only have one action token placed on them this way each turn, even if they are adjacent to multiple friendly figures.

arcade

“Fun Uncle” ArcadeIf your Traveler occupies an opponent’s Starting Area and there are no opposing Drunk Relatives on the board, your Traveler can use Energy Explosion and Precision Strike and may target characters anywhere on the map with a ranged combat attack regardless of range and line of fire.

(Note that this ability allows the traveler to completely bypass any targeting restrictions that “Auntie” Tana Nile might oppose. )

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

drunk-relatives

Drunk Relatives: A Drunk Relative is a special surprise character that will be distributed to each player before the game begins by the Judge. A Drunk Relative follows all normal Heroclix rules with the exception that a Drunk Relative may not be moved to or placed in any square outside of your starting zone by any game effect. A Drunk Relative can only target and be targeted by opposing characters in your Starting Area.

Basically, you want to KO your opponent

Note: Not every player will be given the same Drunk Relative!!

If a Drunk Relative is KO’d, it is scored normally by your opponent. However, a Drunk Relative is ONLY SCORED IF IT IS KO’d!!

If a Drunk Relative is the only character left on any player’s force, then the Drunk Relative may immediately choose and activate any Holiday Host power each turn AS A FREE ACTION.

The Goal: To get home safe and use your Holiday Host’s powers to destroy your opponent!

(Note that it is possible to win without KO’ing your opponent’s Drunk Relative and taking advantage of a Host ability, but it might be pretty tough… )

Okay!! That’s all for now! Post any questions about the scenario in the Comments below.

Otherwise, we’ll see you back at this space tomorrow for another Night of Clix-Mas!!

Safe Travels Everybody!!

Upcoming Games: The Return of SmashClix!!

SuperSmashBros3

Just another quick game announcement for local SE Michigan ‘Clixers!

6/1/2016: The Return of SmashClix!!

Army Construction: Each player brings up to THREE Golden Age teams. Each team MUST consist of THREE characters of 150 points each or less. Only one team will be used in any particular round.

We may play up to three 40 minute rounds.

For force construction, any carded figure will work with the following exceptions:

  • No figure bigger that a peanut base.
  • No Colossal Size figures or team bases.
  • Any figures with special powers that put out bystanders, other figures, special markers, or terrain markers. Examples include: Captain Cold and his hindering terrain markers, Sea King and his water terrain markers, Monsieur Mallah and the Brain, or WS007 Spider-Man and his web special terrain markers. How to Play: SmashClix is a Battle Royal variant with up to six players competing on the same map. A map will be provided by the judge with additional starting zones added for all players.

Before each round, you must choose which of your three teams you are going to play for that round. For each team of three characters, you must also assign an order of play to each character.

The character you designate as Character 1 will start the game; Character 2 will come into play in your Starting Zone if and when Character 1 is KO’d. Character 3 will come into play in your Starting Zone if and when Character 2 is KO’d. And Character 1 will re-enter the game in your Starting Zone if and when Character 3 is KO’d, and so on, until the game ends. When a player’s character is KO’d, his next character gains “First Turn Immunity” when it comes into play.

Once everyone has selected a team AND a team order, forces are revealed and all players roll 2d6 to determine which player goes first.

Note that you may choose a different team for each round if you wish.

Each player’s turn is limited to 60 seconds or less. The judge may move play to the next player immediately if a player’s turn lasts more than one minute.

You can score points by KOing opposing characters on your turn (or rarely by finding a heart container). Every opposing character that is KOed on your turn (by an attack or any other affect) adds one to your overall score. However, whenever you are KOed (whether or not it’s your turn) you subtract one from your overall score. For example, If you KO three characters during a round and you are KOed twice then your overall score for that round is +1. High Score Wins.

Weapons Falling from the Sky: To aid you in powering up your character, for this scenario, all characters gain the following Trait: “3… 2.. 1. GO!: At the start of your turn, if this character is at least 5 spaces away from its starting area, you MAY roll on the Equipment and Immediate Effects table.

What that means is that at the start of your turn you MAY roll 2d6  and consult the following table:

EQUIPMENT AND IMMEDIATE EFFECTS TABLE:

  • 2 – Poison Mushroom – Immediate Effect – You are immediately KOed (lose -1 to your overall score due to KO)
  • 3 – Bob-Omb – Immediate Effect – You and any other figures within 2 spaces are immediately dealt 2 unavoidable damage.
  • 4 – Hammer – Equipment – While equipped your character has: -3 speed, Earthbound, and Improved Movement: Ignores Characters. The equipped character may use quake as a free action with a locked damage value of 4. Knock back caused by this use of quake is unavoidable and if damage is incurred from the knock back, that damage can’t be reduced below one. You may not make any other attacks besides the free action quake.
  • 5 – Beam Blade – Equipment – Equipped character can use Blades/Claws/Fangs and Exploit Weakness. Attacks by the equipped character cause unavoidable knock back and if damage is incurred from the knock back, that damage can’t be reduced below one.
  • 6 – Super Mushroom – Equipment – Equipped character gains the Colossal Size symbol (including giant reach 3), and they can use Close Combat Expert. Attacks by the equipped character cause unavoidable knock back and if damage is incurred from the knock back, that damage can’t be reduced below one.
  • 7 – Warp Star- Immediate Effect – You may immediately move to any square on the board.
  • 8 –  Fire Flower – Equipment – Equipped character ignores battle fury (if they have it), Range is locked at 8, they can use Energy Explosion, and they deal damage with Energy Explosion as if they had three printed bolts. Attacks by the equipped character cause unavoidable knock back and if damage is incurred from the knock back, that damage can’t be reduced below one.
  • 9 – Light Gun – Equipment – Equipped character ignores battle fury (if they have it), Range is locked at 8, and they can use Ranged Combat Expert. Attacks by the equipped character cause unavoidable knock back and if damage is incurred from the knock back, that damage can’t be reduced below one.
  • 10 – Screw Attack – Equipment – Equipped character can use Hypersonic Speed. Attacks by the equipped character cause unavoidable knock back and if damage is incurred from the knock back, that damage can’t be reduced below one.
  • 11 – Blue Shell – Immediate Effect – Choose an opposing figure. That figure and any other figures within 2 spaces are immediately dealt 2 unavoidable damage.
  • 12 – Heart Container – Immediate Effect – Immediately add +1 to you overall score.

SuperSmashBros3

Notes about the Equipment and Immediate Effects table:

  • You don’t have to roll on the Equipment and Immediate Effects table if you don’t want to. You can skip that step.
  • Immediate Effects are not optional.
  • Equipment you roll on to is immediately equipped to your character without any extra actions needed.
  • You may only have one piece of Equipment equipped at a time. If you roll a new piece of Equipment on the Equipment and Immediate Effects table you may choose to use that Equipment OR you may choose to keep using the equipment that you already have (or you can use nothing if you have nothing to start).
  • You may not “drop” equipment, but you may replace it with a different piece of equipment by rolling on the Equipment and Immediate Effects table at the start of your next turn.
  • If you are KOed you lose any Equipment you had.

Upcoming Games: Team Spirit, TMNT and… Oh Yeah… MORE SMASHCLIX!!

Just a couple of quick local game announcements for SE Michigan Clix’ers before we go back to our regular scheduled programming!!

Hello once more! Here is the upcoming schedule for Heroclix games at Comics & More in Madison Heights:

03/30/2016:

Team Spirit

Game: TEAM SPIRIT

Entry Fee: $5.00

The Setup:

Man, March is the month of the Hero/Hero faceoff! Batman vs. Superman! Daredevil vs. Punisher! Captain America vs. Iron Man!! Wait, that’s May…

Nevertheless, we will be playing “Team Spirit,” a 400 Point Golden Age game wherein each player constructs two Themed Teams–one Marvel Team, and one DC Team. But not just any Themed Team; you will be constructing Themed Teams that are comprised of members of an actual superhero team. Which superteams you choose to construct will be up to you–there is no master list we’re working from, so you can build any teams that appeal to you, so long as it’s a named supergroup.

NOTE: We are looking for superHERO teams, not supervillain squads. Having said that, please note that this rule only applies to the actual team you select. If, for example, you are playing a traditional Hero team (say, “X-Men”) and happen to include a figure who is traditionally a villain BUT HAS THE APPLICABLE KEYWORD (say, DoFP017 Magneto), that IS allowed.

NOTE PART TWO (ELECTRIC BUGALOO): Very much like the “Civic Pride” game we played previously, you can sort of tune this scenario to your preferred difficulty level. Want to go the easy route? Select Avengers or S.H.I.E.L.D. and Justice League or Green Lantern Corps. Want to make it a little harder? Choose some teams like Marvel Knights or Heroes for Hire and Outsiders or Justice League International. Really want a challenge? Try and beat the field playing teams like Champions or All-Winners Squad and Team 7 or Legion Espionage Squad which–hey!–is actually a thing!

Each round, the LOSER of the Map Roll must select first which team–Marvel or DC–that they wish to play; then their opponent gets to choose which team they would like to play. Note that this could result in matchups of teams from the same universe.

Now here’s the important part: All points earned by DC players will be scored as “DC Points,” and all points earned by Marvel players will be scored as “Marvel Points.”

What do those points get you? Well, we will be giving out 3 Top Prizes for this event. And they will go to:

1st Place: 1st Place will go to the player with the most match victories as normal (total accumulated Victory Points–both Marvel and DC–will be used to determine any tiebreakers). This player will receive a Vampire Batman (wkD-012 Batman).

Overall Marvel Winner: This will go to the player who accumulates the most Marvel points through all three rounds. This player will receive 1 copy of each figure in either the Marvel Knights Monthly OP Kit (Ghost Rider, Daredevil & Punisher) or the Gamma Smash! Monthly OP Kit (Red Hulk, She-Hulk & A-Bomb).

Overall DC Winner: This will go to the player who accumulates the most DC points through all three rounds. This player will receive 1 copy of each figure from an OP Kit of the Judge’s Discretion (basically, it will be the new Brave & The Bold OP Kit IF THAT KIT HAS ARRIVED IN THE STORE AT THE TIME OF THE EVENT!! IF NOT, ANOTHER DC KIT WILL BE SUBSTITUTED!!)

(These prizes will go to three different participants; the 1st Place winner will be ineligible for the other 2 prizes.)

Some final thoughts on this game:

–Each player can bring up to 3 Maps if they wish to do so and choose one of those Maps if that player wins the Map Roll. Otherwise, a random assortment of store Maps will be provided.

–Remember, the LOSER of the Map Roll has to pick which of their teams they’re playing first; the WINNER of the Map Roll gets to see which team he or she is playing against before they choose their own team.

–Even if you lose in the first round, YOU ARE NOT TOTALLY OUT OF IT!! You can still compete for the Marvel or DC prize.

–Again, which team you play each round is up to you; if, for example, you don’t like the way that Marvel team you put together performed in Round 1, you can choose your DC squad in Round 2. Your fate is not determined by the Map Roll in this scenario.

–Because you can play either squad in a given round, you might think about the types of problem pieces you think you’ll face and construct your two teams somewhat differently. If, for example, you come up with a well-rounded Marvel team that you think can take on just about anything except, say, a strong bruiser with Hypersonic Speed, you may want to consider putting together a DC team that would act as counter specifically to Hypersonic Speed pieces (ie characters with Outwit or Plasticity, etc.).

In other words, if you can identify the main weakness of the first team you construct, it may be in your best interest to build your second team to combat any teams that could take advantage of the first team’s weakness.

04/13/2016:

TMNT Nick

As of now, this is the TMNT release date. We will be playing some form of Sealed TMNT–watch this space for further cost and Build details as they become available.

04/27/2016:

SuperSmashBros3

Yup! It’s the return of SmashClix!! We got some pretty great feedback and suggestions from the first go-round running this scenario, so expect even more carnage–and the ability to use more characters in each game!! We’re finalizing the details now, so keep watching this space for all the updated Build and game details as we get closer to this date!

That’s all for now for the upcoming game announcements!! And come right back to the main page in a few days for an article focusing in on Nightlantern–this one has been in the works for awhile, so you won’t want to miss it!

Until then, Stay Safe, and Watch Where You Draw Your Lines of Fire!!

Upcoming Games: World’s Finest Release and Civic Pride!!

Worlds Finest Animated

Just a couple of quick local game announcements for SE Michigan Clix’ers before we go back to our regular programming!!

Hello again! Here is the upcoming schedule for Heroclix games at Comics & More in Madison Heights!!

02/10/2016:  NOTE: DUE TO ILLNESS AND WEATHER CONDITIONS, THIS GAME WILL NOW BE PLAYED ON 03/02/2016!!

Comics & More will be hosting a World’s Finest release event. The buy-in is $25.00 (plus tax) for two boosters, from which each competitor will construct a 300 Point team. The overall winner and Fellowship winner will each get a Streaky (Supergirl’s cat) LE figure, and there will almost certainly be some other LE’s awarded as well!

During the event, additional boosters will be for sale for those who want them at the rock-bottom rate of $10!! After tomorrow night, they go back to $12.99.

Superman Civic Pride

02/24/2016:

Which DC community has the strongest characters in Heroclix? We’re gonna find that out when we play “Civic Pride,” a 300 Point, Golden Age game wherein each competitor fields a DC-only Themed Team using one of the following keywords:

“Amazon”

“Apokolips”

“Atlantis”

“Bludhaven”

“Central City”

“Coast City”

“Fawcett City”

“Gorilla City”

“Gotham City”

“Gotham City Underworld”

“Keystone City”

“Metropolis”

“New Gods” (New Genesis)

“Opal City”

“Star City”

No Resources or Team Bases are permitted. DC Relics and Special Objects are allowed, as are Colossals and ATA’s. Justice League ID Cards may also be used, but the figure being called in must share the same “Civic” keyword as the figure who’s doing the calling.

Players can sort of pick their own difficulty level with this Build. Think you’re really good with a deep collection at your fingertips? Pick “Fawcett City,” “Gorilla City,” “Keystone City” or “Bludhaven,” which offer precious little in terms of roster variety. A bit newer to the game without many options in who you can play? “Metropolis” and “Gotham City” have choices for days.

Which city will you represent?

The Entry fee for this Event is just $5.00, and the winner will walk away with a “Gotham by Gaslight Batman” LE!!

Super Smash Bros

03/16/2016:

The final details of this game are still being worked out, but here’s a hint: It’s called “Super Smash Bros.,” and we’ll have more details on this in the coming weeks!

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for next week as Ninwashui and I start dropping our World’s Finest Top Ten Set Reviews!!

Upcoming Games: Clix TV!! (Or, The 2nd Night of Clix-Mas!!)

[EDITOR’S NOTE: We are unleashing the 12 Nights of Clix-Mas! Tonight is Night 2! If you missed The First Night of Clix-mas, you can catch up right here!]

Clix TV

Welcome to Night 2 of the 12 Nights of Clix-Mas!

Another quick local game announcement for SE Michigan Clix’ers…

On Wednesday, December 16th, at Comics & More in Madison Heights, we’ll be playing: Clix TV!

In honor of all the great comics-based TV, we will play a 300 Point, Golden Age game with a $5 Entry Fee.

Prizes will come from the “Arrowette” Monthly OP Kit, although…

IMPORTANT PRIZE NOTE: IF WE GET THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN KIT WIZKIDS HOLIDAY KIT IN TIME, WE WILL AWARD PRIZES FROM THAT INSTEAD!!

The Stipulations: Each character on your team must have appeared on a Network, Cable or Streaming LIVE ACTION Television show. Animated appearances don’t count, but the show does not have to currently be on.

As long as piece shares a real name OR a character name (ie, Clark Kent or Superman) with a character from a TV show, that piece is eligible.

Now, if you don’t watch a lot of TV but want some examples, you can build your team from Clix’d characters who have appeared on such shows as:

(DC)

Supergirl (2015: Notable characters include Supergirl, Jimmy Olsen, Hank Henshaw, Lucy Lane, General Lane, Red Tornado, etc.)

Flash (2014-Current: Flash, Firestorm, Jay Garrick, Vibe, Killer Frost, Zoom, Reverse Flash, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Vandal Savage, Heat Wave, Captain Cold, Golden Glider, Girder, Jesse Quick, Captain Boomerang, Rainbow Raider, Gorilla Grodd, Weather Wizard, Dr. Light, etc.)

Arrow (2012-Current: Green Lantern, Black Canary, Arsenal, Mister Terrific, The Atom, John Constantine, Amanda Waller, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Merlyn, Huntress, Brother Blood, etc.)

Smallville (2001-2011: Clark Kent, Bizarro, Lex Luthor, General Zod, The Martian Manhunter, etc.)

And so on…

(Marvel)

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-Present: Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Agent Ward, Nick Fury, Lady Sif, Agent Fitz, Agent Simmons, Absorbing Man, Skye/Quake, John Garrett, Mockingbird, Deathlok, Victoria Hand, Major Glenn Talbot, Eric Koenig, Mister Hyde, Graviton, Blackout, Blizzard, etc.)

Marvel’s Agent Carter (2014-Present: Peggy Carter, Dum-Dum Dugan, Jarvis, etc.)

Daredevil (2015-Present: Daredevil, Kingpin, etc.)

Jessica Jones (2015-Present: Jessica Jones/Jewel, Luke Cage, The Purple Man, Hellcat, etc.)

You get the idea.

Clarifications:

Ninwashui and some others have brought up certain pieces to inquire whether they’re eligible.

To wit:

Zoom (Black Lantern): Eligible. Remember, the parenthetical information doesn’t actually count when determining whether certain game effects work or don’t work.

Batmobile: Eligible. Vehicles are still characters, so yes, the ol’ Adam West show qualifies the Batmobile.

Thor (any version): Eligible. A live action Thor appeared in The Incredible Hulk Returns, which, while technically a TV Movie, still premiered on network television and was, in fact, a continuation of the Incredible Hulk TV series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.

Okay! Hope to see you down at Comics & More for some good ol’ fashioned boob-tube mayhem!

And don’t forget to come back tomorrow night for another Night of Clix-Mas! We’ll be taking a closer look at what sets, intellectual properties and characters YOU want in the upcoming year!

(Actually, it’ll mostly be what I want in the upcoming year, seeing as I’m writing the article!)
