All Work and No Play Makes Shuma a Dull… Uh, Horror-Creature. Thing!! (Or, The Build 2/11/15–1000 Point Rampage)

So on 2/11 Comics’n More is having a 1000 Colossal Rampage. I have a family thing that I need to attend and can’t make it. However, I didn’t realize that until I had already designed 3 teams (eh, it happens). So here is what I would have been playing…

The Format: 1000 point Rampage! Oreo Age. (Which includes Superman and any sets which came out later – except for Star trek and Yu! Gi! Oh! Because having Iron Fist knock out the Enterprise is too weird and because Yu! Gi! Oh! has always sucked.) Each team should have a Colossal, if possible. Otherwise, bring your best giant slayers.

“There Is Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself… and This Team.” (Asgardian Themed Team)

  • FI026 Kuurth
  • FI024 Greithoth
  • FI107D The Serpent
  • ATA072 The Mighty
  • Total= 1000 points

How it works: Greithoth will want to try and hit someone with Invincible or Impervious (like an opposing Colossal) right away so that his trait EXTREME ABSORPTION will let him use that power on all 8 of his clicks. He’s got Running Shot so he has a 9 square attack range. (move 5 shoot 4) If he lands exactly on click 5 you should Revert him to IIM103 Absorbing Man. On click 6 or 7 revert to IIM033 Absorbing Man. Being a giant he is also the taxi that carries Kuurth in battle. Try and picture that in your head.

Kuurth is great against smaller, squishy characters that can be carried. His opening Movement lets him charge 6 squares and still attack. That can surprise some people–especially if Kuurth is running through a wall to do it. If he lands on click or 6 or 7 you can consider Reverting to IIM032 Juggernaut, but Kuurth has a 10 click dial so you may not want to Revert at all.

The Serpent needs to build up Fear Counters as fast as possible. To best way to do this is to use Running Shot along with his printed 3 Bolts to target your opponents weakest pieces 3 at a time. Divide up your 7 damage to do at least 1 to everyone. That’s 3 Fear Counters a turn. It will only take 2 turns of that to build up a enough Fear to take multiple actions every turn. While rolling all those attacks with the Serpent you could roll doubles to activate the Mighty ATA. If you do, then your force will have a serious advantage. You will gain 10 counters which you can use to modify the next 10 attacks against your team by -1. That should be a serious advantage.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: Only a person with a dark, dark soul would even think to play The Mighty ATA during an event like this...]

How It works: If you’ve ever played (or played against) Ziran the Tester then you know about his (her? its?) TESTING Trait. For those of you who are new to this figure, the TESTING Trait allows you to do up to 6 damage to an opposing force before the game even starts. Thanos brings a lesser version of that with his CHOOSE – THE GAUNTLET OR THE TRIBUTE Trait. Both of these Traits can be used to damage an opposing character like a Colossal without needing to make an attack roll and before the game even starts.

Once the game does start your opponent’s attention should be focused entirely on the 12 range, 13 attack, 6 damage, Psychic Blasting, Multi-Attacking Ziran the Tester. That distraction will let Thanos make the most of his A BLOODY PATH TO FIND MY SON Trait. People largely panned this character when he came out, but I believe they were wrong. At the 200 point level he can lead himself and if he’s not the opponents main target, he can use Outwit to dish out a bunch of damage.

How It works: In a game where you know the other team is most likely going to be centered around a large point character, Shuma Gorath’s EMERGE THROUGH YOUR GREATEST CHAMPION should go a long way towards keeping him healthy and in the game. The last thing you want to face is someone with the Mystics TA that can automatically heal. Do your best to put Shuma within 5 spaces of the enemy team so that you can use Flurry (and later, his Special Incapacitate)

Dr. Strange will use his GATHER THEM: SECRET DEFENDERS OR MIDNIGHT SONS Trait give everyone the Defenders Team Ability. That will let Shuma Gorath share his 19 Defense Value with the rest of your team who (except for Doctor Strange) can add their Energy Shields for a total Defense of 21 against ranged attacks. The team all need to stay adjacent to make this work, so line them up in front of Shuma. Further complicating your opponents attack strategy is the Mystics TA and the fact that your team has 4 Probability Controls!

This is what me and HypeFox actually look like, FYI…

It’s late at night on Christmas Eve and I am sitting here in front of my PC, with HCRealms.com up, planning teams. No, actually, that’s a lie. I am actually obsessing over a recent loss at a tournament.

A guy played 4 Wall Constructs on a 4 person team. I was piloting a Red Lantern team and when we met in battle and I got a few shots in, but it wasn’t nearly enough. He used Pulse Wave to quickly KO two of my men. I was left with 2/3 of my build, but only one character with a natural 3 damage showing and the other people left on team didn’t have move and attack abilities left on their dial. Even though I had all these characters on the board I was no longer capable of attacking his team. All these pieces left on the board and no matter what dice rolls I got or what strategy I used, from that point forward there was nothing to be done except lose.

So I am sitting here. Plotting. Obsessing. Planning team upon team. I should be lying in my bed, getting a decent night’s sleep so I can enjoy Christmas morning, but instead I am just sitting there planning. Plans of immortal Groots and Poisonous Grasshoppers are running through my head and I’m rejecting them all. They’re not good enough. None of them are good enough. And then my head starts to nod… and I am asleep. No, I’m awake! Asleep. Awake…

And then I hear it.

Someone–or more accurately some THING–creeping down the hallway, each step echoing like plastic parts rattling around in a cardboard box. Fearfully I turn my gaze to the door. Slowly now, ever slowly, it rounds the corner to my office and it’s… a man. Carrying several huge tackle boxes full of HeroClix, all stacked on top of each other in front of his face.

Trembling, I summon what courage I have left and ask, “W-who are you?” He–it’s a man, now, I can see his silhouette–he starts to reply in a deep jagged voice I don’t recognize. “Kyrphlxx.” Then he coughs and reveals himself by putting the boxes down on a chair.

In a familiar voice he bellows, “It’s me–your brother, HypeFox.”

“What are you doing here? Christmas isn’t until tomorrow.”

“You, Ninwashui, you… have brought me here,” and he points a bony finger in my direction. “You’ve forgotten what’s important. both in HeroClix… and in life. Will you be at my house on Christmas Day? Or will you still be here trying to figure out how to beat he who defeated you not a fortnight ago?

“You don’t understand! I’m so close!” I point at the Builds I’ve collected on the screen. “I’m SO CLOSE TO FIGURING IT OUT!”

“And once you finally figure out how to defeat that Build, Ninwashui, will someone else not find another Build that’s even more powerful? And will you not be right back where you started?”

“No,” I reply. “I can beat that guy. I’m going to buy some Entities off eBay. and I can always search the Forums on the Realms for strategies. I can beat that guy next time. I can beat them all!”

Hypefox sighs.

“I’ve been where you are. I’ve spent too much money and time on HeroClix. You need to learn what I could not before it’s too late. You need to remember that HeroClix is supposed to be a game, not an obsession. It’s not real life. I need to get that through to you before it’s too late. Now, you’re dreaming and it’s almost Christmas, so I’ve arranged something festive for you. Tonight you will be visited by three people. Without their help you cannot hope to shun the path you tread. Expect them tonight. But be warned: while the first two are friends, the last is one of the greatest enemies of fun the world has ever known. He will tempt you… but his is a path that leads to ruin. And years of obsolescence. Y’know what? It’ll make more sense after you meet him.” And just like that his giant tackle boxes fall over. I glance at the pile for just a moment, then turn back to HypeFox–but he’s gone. And now so are the tackle boxes. I am alone again. Or at least I thought I was…

Standing behind me I suddenly notice a tall figure. I turn and it’s my friend Scott. I’m startled, but he immediately cuts off my gasp and says, “I’m here to remind of your HeroClix past.” Suddenly we’re not at my house anymore. Instead, both of us are watching our younger selves in my parents basement. It’s 11 years ago. We had just stated playing HeroClix about a month earlier. Hypefox, Scott, and I were having a battle royal and sitting around an early map trying to figure what was hindering terrain and what was blocking. I noticed my team had Rogue and the Juggernaut. They weren’t very good, but they were some of my favorite characters from the comics and I just loved playing them for that reason.

Then something occurred to me. I turned to the older version of Scott that had brought me here. “I understand why you brought me here. You wanted me to remember why I play HeroClix. You wanted to remind me of why I thought it was fun. I get that. But, why are you here tonight? You don’t play HeroClix anymore.” He took a few seconds to think and replied, “That’s true. The way the game progressed didn’t follow my interests. Once they invented white powers the game was a little a more complicated than I liked for something that’s just a way to pass the time with friends. But, that’s not the case for you. You like Chess and you love playing complicated games. That’s how you have fun. Even though we have fun differently we can still have fun together–as long as it’s fun and not winning at all costs. That’s why I’m here tonight. Remember that and we’ll always be friends.” And then a mini Juggernaut comes flying through the air. I turn to look for who threw it, but I’m not there anymore. I’m back at my desk. But I’m not alone…

Standing there is my friendly rival Andrew from my local HeroClix venue. It seems that no matter how many people are at Comics & More on a particular night, we always end up playing each other. If I’m doing badly then I will see him at the losers table. If I am doing well then I see him in the Finals. The last time we played we were both competing to not be in last place at a Flash Sealed event. I won that round fielding a team that wasn’t good, but slightly less-worse than his. The time before that he won the day when he “Krampus’d” me.

He started addressing me as soon as he saw me. “I don’t have to take you far to show you what I need to show you tonight. What do you remember about playing HeroClix against Brian, the judge at our venue?”

“Well he’s very good. I’ve probably lost more than half the times I’ve played against him. I noticed he loves playing theme teams and usually they aren’t very good. I mean the pieces he uses aren’t the most powerful, but he plays them well and usually ends up beating me or at least playing me close. I’ve never had a blow out win against him. I know he got 4 Entities playing War of Light events. Maybe that means he’ll start using them on some really over-powered teams.”

“I know exactly what he’s doing with his Entities. Here let me show you.”

“Are you going to teleport me to his house?” He looks at me like I’m nuts.

“Wow. That’s creepy. I’d rather not, if that’s fine with you. Why would you even–”

“It’s been a long night.”

“I mean, how are we suppose to teleport, exactly? You know teleportation isn’t real, right? You know what? Just pull him up on Facebook. And then we’ll agree that we never had this conversation.”

I look up Brian, our venue judge, on Facebook. Just like Andrew said, his Facebook page shows all the unimaginably-evil plans for the Entities he owns. Actually, when I look closer the plans he has are the opposite of evil. The exact entry reads “I need X-Mas money! Make me an offer for these Entities.” He’s selling them all off to buy Christmas gifts for his family! He wasn’t really interested in making cutthroat teams–his Clixing would be just fine without the Entities. I turn to ask Andrew about it, but he’s gone.

But in his place is someone I sense is decidedly more evil…

Behind me is a figure in a black cloak, his countenance obscured by shadows from his large, billowing black hood.

“Your friends have shown you the weakling you are. But I can show you something else. Something… different.” His voice is strange. Each syllable drips with venom, but there is a hollowness to him, an emptiness that almost echoes against the walls. “I’ll show how to never lose a game of HeroClix ever again.”

Just like that his cloak opens up like a black hole and sucks me inside! It’s total darkness. When I can see again I’m looking at… myself. But I’m older. At least 5 years. I’m at very nice long wooden table. I look around at the room and it’s Comics & More. But it’s very different. The toys are gone and the comics are down to just one small bookshelf. In their place are row after row of nicely polished playing tables and some giant shelves with HeroClix for sale. There’s a slogan on the wall that says “Winning Means Never Having to Feel Like a Loser.”

I look at myself and notice that I’m arranging pieces for a tournament. I’m alone so I must be planning out my team before everyone gets there. I look at some of the things that I have displayed in front of me. I see at least 10 different Chase Primes. I see a new type of Possession Piece called a “Multiverse Alternate Reality Incursion Entity”. I see a new Infinity Gem Resource. I see a Quinjet. I even see two Team Bases with Galactus and the Spectre on them on them! All of these things must have come out in the next 5 years and it seems like I have them all!

The hooded figure speaks. “In your future HeroClix rides a wave of popularity generated by a new breed of player. The type of player that will win at any cost. Six months from now WizKids hires a new CEO. One they know will be able to get every last dime out of a well established successful brand. He’ll start by introducing new revenue streams such as needing a to pay for a special license just to purchase packs of HeroClix. Then he’ll make all of the most powerful figures more rare and hard to find with each passing set. The power level will increase so much from set to set that almost every figure in the previous set is useless as soon as the next set comes out.”

I look at all the pieces in front of me.

“Am I the new CEO?”

“No…” replies the hooded figure. “I am. But you’re the first and best of the new win at any costs HeroClix player base. You could even be the most successful Clix player ever. You just have make the right choice tonight–the choice to embrace your destiny.”

Then It happens. I was so busy looking at all of the HeroClix figures on display that I missed seeing the piece of paper on the table in front of my future self. I see it now, and I know that my future self has taken a dark path. The paper is a tournament flyer. It reads, “Come face the best HeroClix player in the world. Tournament hours 8-midnight on Christmas Eve.” I’m not alone at Comics & More because it’s early before a tournament. I’m alone because it’s Christmas Eve and everyone else is with their families tonight.

I point at the paper and turn to the figure in Black.

“I know now what kind of person I am in the future. That man has gone down a dark path. The only question now is who are you? Who is the CEO that is so determined to get every bit of profit out of his fanbase that he invented things like a pack license and the Prime Chase rarity?”

Slowly the hooded figure laughs and removes his hood. “My name? Oh, I think you know my name, Ninwashui. I think you’ve known it all along!”

“I’m former University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon.”

I wake up screaming at my keyboard, with Dave Brandon’s empty laughter ringing in my ears.

I look around. It’s morning. It’s Christmas. I look up at my screen and during the night I’ve created the most evil team I’ve ever seen. It exploits timing rules and a broken combo to KO an opposing team before they’ve left their starting area. This could beat anything wall guy could throw at me. I’ll be the best player ever. Then I look closely at it. A casual player wouldn’t even get an attack off against this team. It would win every game 300 to nothing. Before I even realize it I am pressing delete. I take a minute to send a simple text about my night to HypeFox and get ready to go see him. Somewhere he’s reading what he’ll soon tell me is the most confusing back-t0-back texts he’s ever seen.

“Hey HypeFox. It turns out I’m not evil.”

“Also, screw Dave Brandon.”

I stretch and stand. I head to the bathroom for a quick shower, but as soon as I look at the mirror, I’m startled by another visit from Phantom HypeFox.

“You know, Ninwa, I’ve been thinking–if you had used an Orange Power Battery, you could have prevented the Wall Guy from–”

I wave my hand to cut him off.

“Not today, HypeFox.” And I notice now that for the first time in the last couple days I’m actually smiling. “It’s Christmas, and I’ve got somewhere I gotta be.”

What This Build Does:

This is a Themed Team for a No Resources, No Entities environment (since it obviously features neither of those things) that features 3 of the most versatile Scientist-keyworded figs in Modern right now. It’s specifically designed to give you three figures who can each fill multiple roles.

Jenny Sparks is an awesome Primary Attacker because of her Trait (ELECTRICAL CORTEX SHORT CIRCUIT: When Jenny Sparks hits an opposing character, that character can’t use special powers from now until your next turn.). However, she also offers a Special Leadership (IF YOU DIE, I’LL JUST DIG YOU UP AND PUT YOU TO WORK AGAIN: Jenny Sparks can use Leadership. When she does and the result is 6, remove all action tokens from all adjacent friendly characters with the Authority keyword.) that pairs especially well with Engineer, who can taxi Jenny and then have a chance for Jenny to take any and all tokens off of her next turn!

Engineer, even at the 90 Point level, is also a decent Primary Attacker OR Supporting Piece because she can pick up to three different Standard Powers a turn (not unlike Zombie Super-Skrull). She can be whatever you need her to be every turn.

Finally, Captain Marvel can ALSO be a Primary Attacker! He also offers a supporting Defend power (DEFEND HUMANITY FROM MY PEOPLE: Captain Marvel can use Defend and Super Senses. Modify the defense values of adjacent friendly characters without the Kree keyword by +1. This power can’t be countered.) that’ll boost the Defense of Jenny Sparks and Engineer to 19 if they’re both adjacent! And his Attack Special (UNI-BEAM: Captain Marvel can use Energy Explosion, Incapacitate, and Penetrating/Psychic Blast. When Captain Marvel hits with a ranged combat attack, hit targets can’t make attacks during their next turn.) is among the best in the game, and will ensure that every turn either Jenny is countering ALL of an opposing figs Special Powers, or Captain Marvel is stopping them from attacking at all!

Things to Do In Gaming When You’re (In a Heroclix) Dead (Zone)!! (Or, the Fifth Night of Clix-Mas!!)

So we’re just about to that time of year when ‘Clix news kind of goes dark for awhile and there’s not much happening in the Heroclix world. Flash was great, but December and January generally don’t bring much in the way of new product (there may be some Attack Wing or Yu-Gi-Oh! stuff going on, but that’s about it). Which is fine. February is gonna start a string of four straight months of major releases (JLA: Trinity War, Avengers Assemble, Avengers: Age of Ultron and, um, Avengers: Age of Ultron–and those are just the bigger sets!), so, honestly, a lot of folks could probably use the breather (I know my wallet could).

Even talking with some of the folks at my local venue, I know this is the time of year where general Heroclix fatigue starts to set in a little bit. I’m personally psyched for JLA and Avengers sets, but I know some players who were much more excited about visiting more of the strange corners of the Marvel and DC Universes in the Deadpool and Flash sets. Which is fair enough. The point is, at some point, everyone probably needs to take a breather–even if it’s from a hobby that you love.

Personally, I love gaming in all sorts. So today, we’re gonna take a look at some other games that readers of this blog might find interesting to pursue while we wait for February!

Activision/Blizzard has been making addictive games for twenty years, but most of their games have a strong sci-fi/fantasy element that may appeal to folks who enjoy spinning dials on miniature versions of their favorite comic book heroes. The other important thing about Blizzard games is that they’re constantly evolving; not just with big expansions that you have to buy separately (although their is that for World of Warcraft, Starcraft II and Diablo 3), but with monthly–or in some cases, even weekly–patches that constantly create new goals and rewards for players.

The other things that really sets Blizzard apart is their storytelling and their wonderful roster of characters. In many circles, Sarah Kerrigan, Jim Raynor, The Lich King, Thrall, Malfurion and Illidan, Deckard Cain and Diablo are just as iconic as Captain America, Iron Man, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

Now, the two games I really want to focus on here are Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. Why? Because they’re both (theoretically) free to play.

Hearthstone:

Hearthstone is an online Collectible Card Game featuring characters and settings from the Warcraft universe (specifically World of Warcraft). While you can certainly buy expansion packs with cash (at a sliding scale if you buy in bulk; expect to pay between about $1.16 and $1.50 for a pack of 5 cards), you can also earn in-game gold by completing daily quests to buy the exact same packs. Also, the game gives away packs at certain times (for example, if you logged in during the launch of the newest expansion, Goblins Vs. Gnomes, you were rewarded with 3 free packs).

There are also deck-specific cards that you can earn for free as you play through the tutorial for each character class.

In the long run, you may end up investing a little money, but the barrier to entry is low. It’s not the perfect CCG, but it has a lot of potential and it’s a pretty shallow learning curve that offers it’s own Meta game once you get the basics down.

Heroes of the Storm:

This game isn’t even out yet, but it’s already generating a lot of buzz–and you can sign up for the Beta right now on their website! Described by its own developers as a “team brawler of heroic proportions,” Heroes of the Storm plays almost like a RTS version of Super Smash Brothers. Basically, you choose your Blizzard cannon hero, get teamed up, and try to take out your opponent. As previously stated, folks are eagerly anticipating this game’s release, and it should be free to play.

 

Marvel: Avengers Alliance:

This is a Social Networking game I got hooked on back in 2012 and have occasionally revisited ever since. Like many games of this sort, it is free to play, but only to a point. You can advance in this game and never spend a dime, but it will be slow going.

Basically, you play as yourself AS A S.H.I.E.L.D. AGENT, and as you go along you start collecting different Avengers to assist you (as playable characters). This game features an obscene amount of grinding, but there is a sort of Pokemon-style satisfaction that you get every time you collect a new playable character. Each character can also be outfitted with different items and leveled up, so there’s plenty to do. Also, the developers’ definition of “Avenger” is pretty loose–yeah, you can add Cap and Thor to your team, but you can also earn part-time Avengers like Moon Knight or Tigra, or even never-really-was-a-proper-Avenger characters like Squirrel Girl. Some of the most powerful characters in the game are actually villains that you earn the right to add to your team (guys like Magneto or Doctor Doom).

This game is definitely a time suck, but, like I said, you can play it for almost no money.

This one’s for the ‘Clixer who’s also a huge sports fan. Fanduel offers daily fantasy leagues (entry fees start at as little as $1–you can pay through PayPal) that pay out real money (DISCLAIMER: This site deals in real money, so if you’ve had gambling issues in the past, please stay far, far away…) as soon as that day’s games end. All the major sports are available to play (when they’re in season).

The way it works is pretty simple. You get a salary cap (usually around $60k); you select your roster of players; and then you watch as everything your players do that day earns you points. If you’ve picked wisely enough, you’ll usually earn back your entry fee (although you can win a lot more, too). If you haven’t, well, there’s always tomorrow.

From a Heroclix perspective, what I like about playing this sort of Fantasy game are the decisions you have to make when building your roster. It’s not unlike how you would approach building a team in Heroclix. You only have so much available capital to use, so you can’t just take every superstar you want (in the same way that you usually can’t fit more than one high-cost figure onto a 300-Point ‘Clix Build). You want Lebron James on your NBA team? You can have him, but it may mean starting Khris Middleton in your other Small Forward spot. Who’s Khris Middleton? Exactly.

In addition Lantern Resources, Rings, and Constructs may be used, but they must match what has already been given out as tournament prizes. The means the only allowable constructs are: Crossbow, Decoy, Catapult, Scissors. The Constructs, Ring, and Battery may be of any color.

This game(like every game tonight) was played on the indoor map “Nok”. Also, in every game I equipped the Scissors on Zilius Zox, the Decoy on Guy Gardner and Crossbow on Mongul. I always did this the first three turns of the game.

Game 1 was against a fairly new player so the start of the game went slowly. Entities are a lot to think about for new players. I had an entirely close combat team and his featured Sayd, who sported a 9 range. I was at a disadvantage approaching his team. I sent Zilus Zox up the center and had him stand on an object. Mongul and Guy Gardner went into room and hid behind some blocking terrain in little room at the center of the map. He responded by moving his team to the outside of that room and it was back to my turn. I cleared. He moved Laira up to the entrance of the room. He then used Sidestep with Sayd to get into range and then (after using Probability Control) he hit Zilius Zox from 9 spaces away for 3 clicks of damage minus toughness. His Sinestro Corps Recruit was lurking on his side of the map nearest to Laira.

On my turn Guy Gardner was in range to Charge Laria and he did so, but he missed both Flurry attacks. Mongul moved adjacent to her and Zilus Zox moved adjacent to Sayd. Sayd was able to hit Zilus Zox again and knock him to click 5, but the rest of his team was pushed and cleared action tokens to end his turn. On my turn the penetrating Poison damage started. Laira took two clicks right away. She additionally got damaged from Mongul’s attack.

That was pretty much how the game went from that point forward. Mongul and Gardner took out Laria quickly. Then Mongul helped Zilus Zox KO Sayd and Gardner took out the Sinestro Corps Recruit. In all of that only Gardner took any additional damage and that just knocked him into penetrating Poison.

As I closed with my opponent I hid in that same little room. My opponent used Running Shot with Tomar Tu and John Stewart both targeting Mongul through the side entrance of that room. Tomar hit and Stewart rolled a 3 and missed. Because of a Perplex from Brother Hymn, Mongul takes 2 damage. Tomar Tu is too close to John Stewart to use Outwit. On my turn, Mongul uses the Red Crossbow to target John Stewart and rolls a 4 to miss. That would be the only ranged attack my team makes all tournament. Zilus Zox goes into “open space” between Tomar Tu and John Stewart and attacks Tomar Tu. Tomar Tu hits his Super Senses roll. Because of the “open space” special terrain feature of the “Nok” map, Guy Gardner (who doesn’t fly) can charge only next to Tomar Tu. He rolls a 7 and then a 12 on his two Flurry rolls. His Precision Strike allowed him to ignore Super Senses and get a 2 hit instant KO on Tomar Tu.

Everyone clears. Mongul and Zilus Zox double team John Stewart. Guy Gardner moves next to the Controller Construct. On my opponents turn, Brother Hymn moves to help John Stewart and John Stewart shoots Guy Gardner in the back for 2 clicks of damage. Poison from Mongul and a strong penetrating Blades attack from Zilus Zox KO John Stewart in short order. Guy Gardner knocks the Controller Construct to it’s last click, but can’t finish the job due to Knockback into open space terrain.

The game ends shortly after with Mongul Poisoning Brother Hymn to death and Zilus Zox hunting down the Controller Construct.

This third game is against a very experienced player who loves to use Telekinesis to make strategic strikes. He’s a great guy, but on the HeroClix battlefield I consider him my personal nemesis (or at least my personal nemesis who isn’t named Hypefox). Besides, I still owe him after he “Krampused” me the last time we met.

So the game gets going and I’m in that same little room in the center of the map again. Zilus Zox and Guy Gardner are up front. His characters are still huddled around his Lantern in his starting zone except for Arisa who is about 5 squares up and the Orange Construct who waits just outside the room. The Weaponer chooses Psychic Blast and moves up 6 spaces to declare a ranged attack on Zilus Zox. Zilus Zox makes his Shape Change roll, but unfortunately Guy Gardner doesn’t. Just like that Guy Gardner is on his last click. Then he uses Arisa to TK the Weaponer back to his starting area and I have no chance to strike back.

On my turn I know I have to do something desperate or I will lose this match without scoring any points. I take Mongul and move him his full twelve range to base Arisa on the side opposite the Weaponer, but Mongul is now double tokened. This freezes Arisa in place within 3 of the Weaponer and now she can’t use her Outwit. Zilus Zox and Guy Gardner clear. On my opponents turn he misses with Arisa and the Indigo Recruit uses Sidestep to move the Weaponer and himself away from Arisa.

Unfortunately for my opponent, moving the Weaponer around moved him within 11 spaces of Zilus Zox and on my turn Zilus Zox bases both him and the Recruit. Guy Gardner engages the Orange Construct and Mongul can’t attack, but he Poisons Arisa for 1. On my opponents next turn Zilus Zox makes a Shape Change roll against the Weaponer and the Indigo Recruit misses. Arisa clears. Back to my turn and more penetrating Poison damage is dished out by Mongul and Zilus Zox. Mongul finishes off Arisa. Zilus Zox hits an Exploit Weakness attack on the Weaponer for 4 damage.

The Weaponer eventually hits Zilus Zox onto his 4th click. The Recruit tries to break away unsuccessfully for several turns. Zilus Zox strikes back by knocking the Weaponer to his last click. The Recruit finally breaks away and carries the Weaponer to the Battery to be healed. He returns to click 6. The next turn he is surrounded by the weakened Gardner and Zilus Zox. He uses Flurry to knock them both out in one turn, but now he’s double tokened. Mongul Charges him and knocks the Weaponer to his last click. On my opponent’s turn, the Recruit misses two break away rolls and there is nothing he can do after that. He can’t use Regeneration because he’s double tokened and he can’t use Support from the Battery because I’m still next to him. On my turn the Weaponer is KOed via Poison and Mongul knocks out the Recruit with an attack.

Learning

What I learned:

  • Red Penetrating Poison is extremely strong! I did almost as much damage with that as I did with attacks.
  • I’m going to make sure to play Arisia if I pull her in Month 6. Her TK plus Outwit and her ability to be a decent secondary attacker are great for her point cost. I’d love to pull my own TK Shenanigans in month 6.
  • It’s been a while since I played against a Weaponer of Qward. He’s still ridiculous.
  • Laira and Tomar Tu are both good for their point cost. Both are worth playing if you pull them.
  • Mongul was good, but his range drives up his point cost and I only made one ranged attack all day. I also had chances to use the Black Mercy special, but in every case I deemed his natural 4 damage to be the better option. If I was playing more figures that had damage reducers then maybe I’d feel differently. The way I used him today it was more wasted points.
  • Guy Gardner and his mobility were great for his point cost. He could move up to 7 squares and still make and attack. His 12 attack value was awesome.
  • Zilus Zox was the star of my team. His great Defense and off the charts offensive abilities are worth every point. The penetrating Poison on his first 4 clicks is the best among all the reds who typically don’t get penetrating Poison until later in the dial. Throw a red Scissors on him and watch him take down figures twice his point cost!

Some General Notes About the Set:

Here’s some things HypeFox was actually right about. He said:

  • There is a metric Poop-Ton of generic figures in this set… which, for once, is actually awesome!” – These packs had two chances of pulling a good figure. Every pack has a rare, but now some also have a unique version of a generic that is usually very playable (AKA Tana Nile instead of Rigellian Colonizer). For example, I got a pack containing my 3rd Killraven (ugh), but it also contained my first Recorder #451. I ended up feeling that that a was pretty good pack. Bravo Wizkids.
  • In terms of Overall Power Level, Guardians is NOT Deadpool” – Agreed. There are less uber-powerful figures in this set, but everything seems remarkably playable. Great for sealed play with seemingly less figures that would give you an auto-win in sealed (like ThorPool).
  • “…the Chases in this set SHOULD have been the Black Order…” – Agreed in that they seem more Chase-like (think Prime’s Titans). However, on the plus side, I own a Thanos now and I wouldn’t own one if he were a Chase. So I guess it worked out in the end.
  • “Zombie Skrull is really just a waste of everyone’s time” – Zombie Skrull is the worst Chase I have ever seen. Ever. I would almost rather never pull a GotG Chase than open that Flaming pile of poopfarts.

Here’s something he was wrong on:

  • “The Inhumans didn’t turn out so hot, in my opinion” – There were some stinkers (Gorgon), but in general I like their inhumanity trait. That perplex brings a lot of value. Hypefox loved the same power on IIM002 Rescue when it was called “I’M NOT LETTING YOU TURN ME INTO A WEAPON“. Why is he suddenly hating on it now? [EDITOR’S NOTE: I have no problem with the Inhumanity Trait. I just don’t like any of their dials outside of maybe Thane. Either way, I think the only way to settle this is with an 800 Point Black Order vs. Inhumans Throwdown with a GotG Pack on the line!!]

5.  GOTG010B Dire Wraith Queen – She brings Pen/Psy, Perplex, Stealth, Energy Explosion, Toughness, and Prob on her first click. In addition her crazy Traited Shape Change makes her hard for opponents hit. She reminds me a lot of SLOSH042E Helspont, but with less impervious and more stealth. What’s keeping her from being higher on this list? She needs slightly higher stats and the basic Dire Wraiths just aren’t that good.

4GOTG013B Recorder #451 – He’d be decent on his own, but his Trait is the real reason you’ll ever really want to field him. He brings a fun new spin on some pieces that would likely have not seen as much play otherwise. Time to dust off your IIM001A Iron Man!

3. GOTG008A Raptor – Sporting Stealth, Flight, and Sidestep, these members of the Brotherhood of Raptors make great taxis for the Armor and Shi’ar-keyworded figures of the world. Remember the Shi’ar? WatX wasn’t that long ago, was it? Remember armor teams? IIM, wasn’t it? … You get the idea.

2GOTG028 Karnak – A solid close combat piece similar to Shang-Chi and Cat. His inhumanity trait is what pushes him over the top. It essentially gives him +1 to attack or +1 to defense that turn depending on your needs that turn. But the real kicker here is his trait and the awesome combo ability it brings. Imagine him with poison from a phoenix shard. Now imagine a penetrating quake from a hammer dropped from the book of shadows!

1. GOTG044 Shriek – She would have made my top 10 except that she needs a lantern construct to be really good. Combine her with the sniper rifle and you’ve really got something there. Everything within 10 range gets battle fury. That means that with good positioning your team can’t legally be targeted by a ranged attack all game by 99% of the figures out there. Even Bullseye won’t be able to touch her. Plus she can mind control anyone in 10 range regardless of line of fire. She severely limits what you can play yourself (maximum carnage or close range figures only), but I think she can be the lynchpin of a successful team.

10. GOTG038 Maximus AND GOTG018 Alpha Primitive –  I made these two figures one entry because the effectiveness of both pieces are closely tied to each other. [EDITOR’S NOTE: This seems an awful lot like cheating.]

They are either both effective or both not. I’ve been arguing with HypeFox for a few weeks now about this guy. I think he has a future in tournaments. HypeFox doesn’t. I think everything the Alpha primitives bring to the table make them well worth 30 points. (especially the Mind Control and free move) When you consider that Maximus can create 2 of them and add that 60 points to your force, then it’s really like you get the remainder of the Maximus dial for 15 points. That seems like a great deal to me.

9. GOTG058 Mentor – Like a buffed up version of SOG038 David Cain – this guy is a sniper instructor just looking for the perfect student. He brings a lot of offense to the table himself, but his real value is transforming a high-range, low-offense character from zero to hero. If you make sure to keep him our your side of the map, he won’t go down easy.

8. GOTG208 Ronan the Accuser – This guy is the perfect sniper. You’d be hard pressed to find this much ranged offense in another character his point level. 9 range, 12 attack, and Pen/Psy make for a deadly character. As a bonus, he’s the glue you need to put together a great Kree team. All the Kree Generics are lacking is will power. This is how they can get it.

7. GOTG059B Doctor Spectrum – I this guy over GOTG059A Doctor Spectrum because he has a better offensive roll to play and costs less points (Plus Rokk isn’t very good). His Trait will make sure you almost never miss. Energy Explosion with 3 arrows will punish anyone standing next to your target. Just watch out for when your opponent starts shooting back, because his low-ish Defense Value makes him pretty squishy.

6. GOTG011B Jason of Sparta AND GOTG011A Spartoi Elite – Remember the Shia’r? Wait I said that already. This is another group of figures that you don’t want to play separately. Consider that one Spartoi Elite will give Jason 18 Defense and a Perplex to waste on whatever he wants. 3 will give him 20 Defense and 3 Perplexes to use on offense! Plus thanks to ship he can carry them all around at the same time. That’s 159  points total for that Defense/Perplex ball. In 300 you could throw in WXM023B Cerise and WXM022 Korvus and still have 17 points to share. Alternatively, Jason and a single Spartoi Elite could bring WXM048 Warstar along to pack a serious punch. You could even make a bunch of Raptor and Spartoi Elite pairs. Lots of options here.

 

Zombie Super Skrull

5. GOTG062 Super Skrull – You can look at his dial and wonder why it costs 170 points. What you need to do is imagine that he has a full dial of hypersonic speed, steal energy, and impervious. If I ever play him on my team that’s exactly what he will have. I was a big fan of WXM038 Legion and the Super Skrull brings that idea to a whole new level.

4. GOTG003 Mantis – For a mere 56 points she brings Prob, Mind Control usable on friendly Guardians, Combat Reflexes, Close Combat expert and Regeneration for when she’s taken a good hit. She’s a support character that can also handle herself in a fight. I’d love to say I originated the love for this piece, but it’s rated 5 stars on HCrealms and Patrick Yapjoco won the ROC championship with her. Consider me a band wagon fan.

3. GOTG007B Captain Marvel – A defensive ability only seen before on 175 point Mon-el Prime now comes on an 82 point piece? And it can’t be countered? What the what? On Offense his penetrating damage ranged UNI-BEAM attack can keep any character he’s able to hit from attacking at all on the following turn. This well rounded piece has it all.

 

Thane

2. GOTG060 Thane – A month ago, Hypefox and I played a game with the Guardians of the Galaxy Movie Starter pieces. He tried to use the starter set Starlord to attack my character once normally and then once with a free action Hadron Enforcer. That seemed way too powerful for me to believe it. We stopped and read Starlord’s card and I was right. If you use the special action Pulse Wave power, then that is your one action with that character this turn. They will never make a character that can do both in one turn, because that would be stupid.

So the next set comes out and we get Thane. Thane can do exactly the trick that Hypefox tried to pull on me last month. He can attack and then once per game do a free action Pulse Wave in the same turn! That’s potentially 9 clicks of damage to a single target in a single turn and all of it would bypass Impervious! Even discounting his Trait, his dial is very tough and deadly. 3 clicks of Invincible up front for only 115 points? That’s almost enough to be the best character in the set.

 

Proxima Midnight

1. GOTG050 Proxima Midnight – This is the best character in the set. For only 100 points you get a long 7 click dial and every click of it is deadly. Her Defense of 18 plus Combat Reflexes was called revolutionary when it originated on SOG039 Lady Shiva. It’s no less effective here. Her nine range and 11 Attack with Pen/Psy is deadly and the unique damage over time feature for hit targets is great. Sharpshooter means she can make ranged attacks while based with her opponent. 4 clicks of Steal Energy should allow her to get back into the fight when damaged. If all else fails she will least do some damage on the way out with her CULL OBSIDIAN trait. This is not a 100 point dial, but that’s all you will need to pay for it!

So it’s been quite a while since I posted a team ideas column, but I think the wait was worth it. I’ve got a great team idea for today’s article that is completely original to this blog right now and very tournament worthy. Without further ado here’s the team:

The most powerful character ever is a Great Lakes Avenger? You bet it is! This team works much better than you might think it does because of timing rules. When multiple effects happen at the start of your turn, you choose the order in which they happen. So the idea is to put a Red Construct on each of your Grasshoppers, which–in addition to the normal effects of the Construct–grants penetrating poison to each character. Once everyone is equipped, use all three actions to Maximum Jump and remove three grasshoppers from the board. They will be double tokened and they will each take a pushing damage. That sounds bad, but stick with me.

On your next turn the Grasshoppers hit the board like virtual napalm. Because of beginning of turn timing rules they can land and then do penetrating poison damage to every adjacent opposing figure immediately. That’s 3 penetrating damage dropped out of the sky with no attack rolls and probably hitting multiple opposing pieces at once. The Grasshoppers are still double tokened, but they haven’t taken an action this turn so they will clear at the end of the turn. And then if you need them to they can maximum jump again next turn with the same bad effect for your opponent. Since you’ve done all that damage on your turn but haven’t taken any actions you can use Maximum Jump on your last unused Grasshopper and even get a standard attack in with Iron Monger. But who likes rolling attack dice? Boring. Just keep doing automatic penetrating damage. That’s so much easier.

Then comes the hard part for your opponent. Every turn a Grasshopper survives next to an opposing character is another Penetrating Poison damage it will do the following turn. Depending on tokens, the number characters he’s playing, and positioning your opponent may not be capable of eliminating them all in one turn. Which means more Poison damage next turn. Just to make it harder on your opponent I’ve included Iron Monger 2.0 on this team. Iron Monger 2.0’s trait says that if your opponent kills a Grasshopper he’ll avoid taking a penetrating poison damage to every adjacent opposing figure next turn, but he’ll trade that for a penetrating explosion damage to every adjacent opposing figure right now! It’s a real lose-lose situation. Don’t knock out a Grasshopper? Take penetrating one damage for every one left alive. Knock out a Grasshopper? Take penetrating one damage for each one you kill.

After your opponent figures out what’s going on, this could be his response.

Something else to keep in mind is that the first Grasshopper that gets KOed resurrects itself for free in your starting area due to it’s Trait. Being in your starting area doesn’t really matter when you are moving around with Maximum Jump and the construct that was on the KOed figure simply returns to the battery to be redeployed on the resurrected figure. It’s really like you are playing 5 Grasshopper napalm bombs, but only paying for 4.

You’ll need a few turns for deploying constructs to get maximum effectiveness out of this team. Waiting until turn 4 is ideal. You can use the fact that this is a theme team to win map roll and make it a map that’s hard to traverse from one side to another. Wundagore Mountain anyone? Then if you need to you can use Iron Monger and any Grasshoppers that are ready to engage the other team for a turn or two from a distance. After taking all those Battery actions early, it should be pretty easy to get to the end of the dial. Which means that if all Grasshoppers are eliminated your opponent will likely still have to face down an Iron Monger 2.0 with Shape Change, Penetrating Poison, Plasticity, and +3 to all stats.

It takes a special kind of crazy to run Lethal Legion at a ROC...

It’s been a little while I wrote a solo article. I’ve been having a mini vacation while at the same time submitting superior Lantern builds and beating Hypefox at his own article. Vote for me in his poll. It’ll be awesome.

In the meantime I attended War of the Light month 3 at Comics N’ More. I sat next to HypeFox as he pulled the only entity… again. Between that and my round one battle (which was the slowest game of HeroClix I ever played – Lost 0 points to 40) I just didn’t have the heart to write the month 3 battle report. The one good part of that was that I got experience playing Sodam Yat. On my team, he wasn’t KOed the whole tournament. Unfortunately, opponents kept knocking him to his 9 attack value click and ignoring him. A trick I would remember.

Gamers Gauntlet in Clinton Township is not my usual venue, but I thought it would be nice to try for a change. Turns out there are some great guys there. I’m still loyal to my regular venue, but I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Gamer’s Gauntlet again. That’s right I went to a War of the Light event and played a SLOSH team. The team abilities were just too good to pass up. Shrinking violet could share her 19 defense using by copying Starman’s JSA Team Ability OR she could Outwit through Stealth using the Superman TA. Having a team with 19 base defense across the board in sealed doesn’t happen very often. Starman also has an exceptional defensive abilities. Add in shared Willpower from Superboy, and then everyone gets Shape Change and Mystics from the Battery when I use the Star Sapphires ring (which, as far as War of Light rings go, is severely underrated). This team would be considered “great” in constructed and I was playing sealed. I’d hate to be facing it.

Round 1 versus WOL026 Sodam Yat, GOTG039 Medusa, and a WOL002 Red Lantern Recruit. I won map roll and we played on the Black Mercy Map. That meant there was no elevated and no blocking terrain to hide behind. My Range focused team had a huge advantage. I don’t remember all of the details of this match, but I do remember the ending. I had KOed everyone but Sodam Yat and surrounded him with my team. Between my Shape Change and his Decoy and Impervious the game ended up looking like we were playing dice masters. I counted at least 6 turns going by with no one able to land an attack even though everyone was based. We just started rushing through turns and they lasted 20 seconds each. The game still almost went to time. It was ridiculous.

Round 2 versus SLOSH033 Stargirl possessed by ION, WOL030A Guy Gardner (Star Sapphires), WOL038 Dex-Starr, WOL002 Red Lantern Recruit, WOL006 Star Sapphire Recruit. We played on the same Black Mercy map that gave my team a huge advantage in round one. I moved up the board unafraid and my opponent was almost completely unable to hit my defense. I started off by hitting the Red Lantern Recruit from Range not wanting to face his penetrating Pois0n. Next I outwitted the special power on Guy Gardner and the Star Saphire Recruit so I didn’t take Mystics damage. I was then able to pick them off at will. As much as my opponent was missing me I also couldn’t touch his remaining characters. Dex-Starr had two Unoutwittable defensive abilities and Stargirl usually had Unoutwittable Impervious and Energy Shield Deflection.

I still hadn’t taken any damage up to that point and then Dex-Starr Pushed to hit for 2 on Starman. Thankfully that was the exact opening that I needed. Starman got Pulse Wave after being hit. The next turn I moved all my characters away and used Pulse Wave to KO Dex-Starr. I had done 4 damage to Stargirl and I was aiming for the kill on the following turn when the judge called time.

 

In one form or another I ended up fighting this guy all night.

Round 3 versus WOL026 Sodam Yat, WOL016 Soranik Natu, a Green Battery, various constructs, and a green ring. This turned out to be a really good game. No more Black Mercy map. This map had elevated to block my LoF. I started off by moving to the middle of the map and putting the crossbow on Superboy. My opponent used TK to move up Sodam Yat. Sodam then activated Charge, grabbed and Ultra-heavy object, and KOed Shrinking Violet just that fast. My remaining two characters had Running shot so I took two shots at Sodam Yat. Unfortunately the Shield and the ring combined to give him +3 to his ranged defense and I missed. He assigned the Decoy to Soranik and cleared Sodam. I assigned the Nurse to Starman and cleared. He charged and attacked Starman and missed. Starman’s trait added another token to him (awesome). On my turn I hit him for 2 damage with Starman and knocked him to click 3. He cleared. On my turn again Superboy missed again and Starman knocked him to Click 5. On his turn he activated Hypersonic, hit Starman for 3, took a Mystics damage, and ran Soranik away. We all cleared on the next turns. I used the Nurse to Regen Starman for 2. Seeing that I could heal to full, my opponent used Hypersonic and ran back to attack Starman. He missed and this time the second token gave him a pushing damage.

We each continued to damage our respective Lanterns by using powers and soon we each got each other’s Batteries to the end of the dials. I was on click 19 he was on click 20. Suddenly all of the stats on the characters in play went up by +2 or +3. The rest of the game went fairly quickly after that. Sodam Yat took a couple of hits right away and was on his last click. He couldn’t KO Starman without be KOed by mystics damage so he ran. I went after Soranik. She did 6 damage to Superboy, but he only took three due to invincible. Soranik was KOed the next turn. Sodam Yat tried to KO my power battery to even the odds. Unfortunately the power battery takes printed damage minus 2. In this case it was only one damage. It survived. The following turn Superboy KOed Sodam Yat with a running shot.

Conclusion: I won all of my matches, but I actually took second place on points. Thankfully, that was still enough to earn WOL112 Atrocitus.

What I Learned:

  • Anyone with a star rod is awesome. I mean SLOSH034 Starman and SLOSH033 Stargirl. Star-lord doesn’t count. Both had Traited defenses that were just killer in the games I played tonight. Stargirl was helped a lot by being possessed by Ion, but it seemed like she is able to add energy shield deflection almost at will and the was my teams “Kryptonite” tonight. Starman’s jujitsu that adds a token happened at least three times tonight. That’s so disheartening for your opponent, especially when it happens to their 250 point WOL026 Sodam Yat.
  • WOL026 Sodam Yat is good as long as you pay the full point value, but his offense isn’t that great until you get to the Ion clicks. I remember playing him several times in month 3 just wanting opponents to do damage to him so that I could play the Ion clicks and finally be able to KO someone. I turned the tables and gave my opponents that feeling this tournament.
  • People have been saying WOL038 Dex-Starr isn’t worth the points he costs, but after seeing him in action I tend to disagree. His defenses are top notch and his Penetrating Poison starts with an easy push to click 2. Add to that the fact that he can be carried by just about anyone and Dex-Starr seems like a winning piece to me.
  • I didn’t give SLOSH046 Superboy the credit he deserved in my SLOSH top 10. He’s a very competent attacker and his ability to grant Willpower to adjacent figures can make teams like the one I played much better. 18 with invincible to start with is very good. I’d definitely play him again.
  • Apparently the SLOSH set was the most over powered set to come out recently. Doubt me? Ask the ROC Champion or the HeroClix World Champion (You’ll definitely get the same answer from both since they are the same guy).

Let’s Be Lanterns, Too!! (Or, Let’s Build an Army for Each Lantern Corps–PART 2 of 3!!)

If you missed Part 1 a few days ago, Ninwashui and I are trying to put together competitive Builds for each Lantern Corps, but we’re throwing in a twist–each Build must feature a character who isn’t normally associated with that color of the emotional spectrum and its related Corps.

To recap, there are two main rules:

1. Each Build has to be a Theme Team (although that Theme doesn’t necessarily have to be for the corresponding Corps keyword) that features a character who isn’t known for being a member of the featured color (Hal Jordan Parallax, for example; or someone who’s never been a Lantern of any color in the comics–like a Marvel character!);

2. For each color, each member of a team has to either start with the corresponding Corps keyword, or they must be able to get it during the game.

There are several ways to do this: use a character from War of Light who’s been made in a color different from the norm (Parallax Hal or Kyle Rayner, Orange Lantern Hal or Blue Lantern Hal, White Lantern Kyle Rayner, Red Lantern Guy Gardner, and so on and so forth); use an Entity to bring any other character in the game into that Entity’s color; or just make a general Theme Team and use the Lantern Power Battery to distribute rings during the game and give each member of a team that color’s keyword (along with some kickass powers!).

In part one, we featured the Sinestro Corps, Indigo Tribe and the Orange Lantern Corps.

Today, Ninwashui is starting us off with… the Blue Lantern Corps!! He thinks he’s come up with some Meta-worthy Build. It’s probably terrible, but whatever. Here it is!!

How It Plays: So, in Magic: The Gathering, blue is the color of counterspells and unsummons–basically, it shuts down offense. Really, it can derail your opponent’s entire strategy. Well, we’re gonna take that idea to Heroclix and run with it!! So if you thought Hal Jordan Parallax was hard to hit with his 19 Defense and -2 to just about every opposing character’s Attack Value, well… meet Superior Spider-Man.

He starts out with an 18 Defense (that bumps up to 19 when he’s next to Captain Marvel, but we will get to the good Captain in a minute) and has Super Senses down his whole dial (which will be important!). He also has a Trait that lets him spit out Spider-Bots for free and attach them with a Power Action. There are two types of Spider-Bots in the game, but you’re really only going to need to make a couple of Mark 1’s at the beginning of the game and attach them. Why? Because each one you attach adds +1 to any Super Senses roll that Spidey makes. Which means that with two Spider-Bots attached, Spidey will straight out AVOID any attack that manages to beat his 18-19 Defense a whopping 66.6% of the time!

But wait! There’s more–a lot more! We’re giving Spidey the Blue Decoy, which adds Shape Change to his repertoire–another 1 in 3 chance that he can’t be attacked. So, to recap, we have a 33.3% chance that Spidey can’t even be attacked, followed by a 66.6% that any attack roll that somehow manages to hit him actually ends up missing him completely! That’s pretty good, right? Nope–not good enough! That’s where the Blue Power Battery comes in! The Battery’s Trait (EMOTIONAL SPECTRUM: HOPE: If the Power Battery, attached Power Ring, and Constructs are all the same color, during each of your opponent’s turns, one friendly Corps member may reroll a roll made for itself.) lets you reroll that 66.6% Super Senses roll. Whew!!

Again, to review, when your opponent declares an attack targeting Spidey, there’s instantly a 33.3% chance that he can’t proceed with that attack. Then, he has to hit at least an 18 Defense (minimum). THEN, if he somehow hits, you get TWO chances at rolling a 3, 4, 5 or 6. Spidey also has the Secret Avengers keyword, which makes it very difficult to Outwit any of his powers. ANNNND Spidey himself has an Outwit to get rid of opposing character’s problem powers (Outwit opposing Precision Strike, Poison or Pulse Wave like it’s the Plague!!).

Um… yeah. I think what Jerry is trying to say is that (assuming a 7 is needed to even hit Spidey in the first place–which means your opponent’s primary attacker better be packing an 11 or 12 Attack Value) for every 30 attacks announced with Spidey as the target, roughly 4 will get through. That’s about a 13.33% chance to deal damage. To put that in perspective, that same theoretical opponent would have a roughly 18% to damage the IIM Absorbing Man LE. BUUUUUUUUT, when we factor in the Blue Power Battery Super Senses reroll, that Spidey number changes to roughly 4 out of every 90 announced attacks that get through–or 4.4%.

Let me type that again: 4 POINT 4 FREAKING PERCENT!! Those are lights out, game over and thanks for playing sorts of numbers! Meanwhile, Spidey is swinging away for 3 damage or more (he has Super Strength) every turn. Yikes. Now, taking all that into account, consider this:

Spidey is not your Primary Attacker.

And now we come to Captain Marvel!! Cap’s Defense Special (DEFEND HUMANITY FROM MY PEOPLE: Captain Marvel can use Defend and Super Senses. Modify the Defense Values of adjacent friendly characters without the Kree keyword by +1. This power can’t be countered.) combined with his native 18 Defense means that Spidey and Bill, Agent of A.I.M. each have a 19 Defense when adjacent to him! But that’s not the best part of Captain Marvel’s arsenal. Nooooo, sir! His Attack Special (UNI-BEAM: Captain Marvel can use Energy Explosion, Incapacitate, and Penetrating/Psychic Blast. When Captain Marvel hits with a ranged combat attack, hit targets can’t make attacks during their next turn.) means that your opponent’s best figures may not even get to announce those attacks against Spidey or take a spin on the 4 out of 90 Wheel of (Mis)Fortune! He doesn’t even need to do damage–he just needs to hit! Does that power sound like fun? Great!

Now give Captain Marvel the Sniper Rifle and watch him do it from 10 Squares away. What’s that, you say? Your opponent’s best piece has Stealth or keeps hiding behind Barrier tokens? Well, that’s why you brought Deadpool’s idiot friend Bill along. On his second click he gets an Attack Special (MY HIGH-ENERGY FINDER THING: Give Bill, Agent of A.I.M. a power action and choose the highest-point opposing character. Until your next turn, that character can be targeted with a ranged combat attack by one friendly character without line of fire to that opposing character.) that is pretty much game over, especially when you consider that every character with a Blue Construct also has the Blue Ring-granted limited Perplex (which means Captain Marvel’s Attack Value could theoretically go to 14!). Captain Marvel can keep your opponent’s best figure locked down every other turn for the entire game!!

How It Plays: This might be the simplest Build of this whole series. The premise is really basic: the only thing better than one Superboy Prime Hypersonic Speed attack each turn is two! Putting the Butcher AND a Construct on Black Talon raises his Attack Value to a 12; a roll of 6 or 7 will give a successful Mind Control hit on SBP, with which you can wreak havoc on the whole board. Superboy Prime’s Movement and Attack will each get +1 with a Construct (giving Superboy a 12 Attack!), and if he hits with his first attack (4 Damage minus any dampeners), you can keep him in range and INSTANTLY ATTACK AGAIN–THIS TIME WITH RANGED COMBAT EXPERT!!

And you can probably just keep Black Talon near the Power Battery so that you can keep healing the damage he takes from Mind Controlling Superboy Prime. And if anyone decides to break off and attack him, he’s packing Charge, B/C/F, and Attack Value that can be modified to 12 (on his top click) along with access to Butcher’s Special Damage Power (HEAT OF RAGE: Once per turn, a friendly character may reroll the d6 roll for Blades/Claws/Fangs.). On Click 3, just when your opponent might expect Black Talon to LOSE B/C/F, he actually picks up access to an Attack Special (BLADES OF THE BUTCHER: Butcher can use Blades/Claws/Fangs. When he does, add 2 to the result.) that gives him B/C/F back AND makes it kinda filthy (I mean, you roll a 6 and all of the sudden it’s Black Talon who’s doing 8 freaking damage in one turn as opposed to SBP, who’s more than capable of that himself.

Of all the teams we’ve designed so far for this series, this team has the highest damage potential. They may not be the best team, but each member is capable of KO’ing even substantial point pieces in one blow!

Straight, With CHASEr 2: Evaluating Legal Entities!! (Or, Ranking the War of Light Entities!!)

A couple months ago, we evaluated all the Modern Age Chase-level rarity pieces and chose what we thought were the Top Ten, then came up with armies that included each figure as an example of what you could do with them. It was a fun exercise that allowed us to publish numerous pictures of Ninwashui as a drunk kitty, but it was also immediately invalidated within a week of its publication by the release of the War of Light Wave 1 spoilers and the coming of the Entities (Chase figures that basically act like resources without actually BEING a resource–sorry M10 Iron Man!).

Well, now that we’re on the cusp of Month 3 of War of Light, we finally have the spoiled dials for the second wave of Entities (so called because they all share the named “Entity” keyword), and we can actually evaluate each Entity against its peers! We’re not doing armies today, just because this article would easily top 6000 words if we did. Also, Ninwashui is now a drunk raccoon, so I have to dig up all new photos. Next time, I promise.

A couple final notes before we get started:

–The Chases are extremely rare (seems to be roughly 2 Chases for every 3 Bricks of War of Light) which has only caused their value to skyrocket–most will run you $100 or more (as of this writing, that is). With Month 3 about to start at many venues, the Wave 2 boosters will be arriving this month–and with them, 5 new Entities (4 Chases and 1 Super Rare–more on that in a little bit though).

–What makes these figures so valuable is their shared Trait (ENTITY POSSESSION: When Proselyte would be KO’d or, if you pay 25 points when building your force, place Proselyte on another friendly character’s card if that character is 25 points or more, has the “fist” or “sharpshooter” symbol, the “shield” or “indomitable” symbol, and the “tiny” or “burst” symbol. That character has [Insert Entity’s name here]‘s keywords and can use the Possessed ability with this character as the Possessor. When that character is KO’d, Proselyte is removed from the game.).

That’s a lot of words, but I bolded the relevant points. What is the Possessed ability? Why, I have it right here (POSSESSED: Click the Possessor’s dial to the same click number as this character and change it during the game in the same way that this character’s dial changes. At the beginning of each of your turns or after this character takes or is healed of damage and actions resolve, you may choose 1 power showing on one Possessor’s dial and 1 combat value on one Possessor’s dial higher than this character’s printed combat value. This character can use that power and modifies that combat value by +1 until your next turn or until it is healed or takes damage. If the Possessor is turned to a KO click, it is removed from the game immediately.)!

Essentially what this means is that you can take virtually any substantial figure in the game (as long as it’s at least 25 points and, like, not a Duo, Giant or Colossal) and give them limited access each turn to a very powerful Entity dial–and this is in addition to any resources you might be playing. This can make even 2 or 3 star figures ridiculously good very quickly.

–Each Entity can be fielded as a figure on its own, but most are pretty middling when played normally. The cheapest is 150 (Entity). The most expensive is 250 (Parallax–which makes sense, given all the trouble he’s caused in the comics). Black Hand (expensive, but his dial is long and effective, and he has Running Shot–not all Entities have a top dial move-and-attack), Ophidian (at least starts with some Sidestep, decent Range, and his top dial Outwit Special is just about the best version of Outwit in Modern Age right now), Entity (because he’s cheap-ish) and Predator (10 Range 2 Bolt Energy Explosion; 18 with ES/D if your opponent wants to retaliate) are all, at the very least, INTERESTING if you’re looking to play an Entity normally. The rest are a tougher sell.

Ion’s Trait (I AM ION, INCARNATION OF THE CORPS: Characters using the Possessed ability while Ion is the Possessor may choose to modify 2 combat values from Ion instead of 1 and may use 2 powers from Ion instead of 1.) straight up tells you, “You’re an idiot if you don’t play Ion as a Possessor,” right there on his card. Parallax is solid from his second click on, but he costs 250 points–the same as Parallax Hal Jordan (which clearly means that there should be a 0-point Hal Jordan out there somewhere that I can play…), who’s easier to build an effective team around. Butcher is a great close combat piece; unfortunately he doesn’t get Quintessence until halfway down his dial, so a team that uses him as the focal point might get out-actioned pretty quickly–and that’s if he doesn’t get lit up on his approach, which is very possible considering he doesn’t really have any native attack avoidance (Stealth, Super Senses, Shape Change, etc.). Adara doesn’t have enough offense to justify being your main piece. And I’m sorry, but you’re not building a 300 point team around Proselyte. You’re just not.

For these reasons, we’re strictly going to be evaluating the Entity’s based on the usefulness while using the ENTITY POSSESSION power.

–Nekron IS an Entity–but he doesn’t have the Possession Trait (well, on one of his dials he can kinda sorta Possess himself–not at the table, Carlos!–by allowing himself access to the powers on his other dials). Therefore, we’ll not be discussing him here today, although I’m sure his time will come! Alrighty!

–As always, figures will be rated on a scale of 1-5 Oxygen Filtration Masks. Why Oxygen Filtration Masks? Because it worked so well for our Guardians of the Galaxy Movie set review, that’s why! But having said that, ALL the Entities are pretty damn good relative to other pieces. But, as stated before, we’re measuring the best of the best here, so those are some pretty high standards!

Okay! I think we’re done with the preliminaries. Here, then, is:

9. WOL064P ProselyteIndigo Tribe Entity: You’re playing War of Light with Wave 2 boosters, you’ve never pulled an Entity before, and you’re just praying to all that’s holy that today is your lucky day. You pop open your first booster, pull it out, and discover that you’ve just gotten Proselyte. The good news? You now have an Entity! The bad news? You’ve got the worst one!

The biggest thing Proselyte gives you top dial is Perplex. Not a “only to increase combat values” type of Perplex but an honest to goodness actual Perplex. Outside of War of Light Sealed play, though, Perplex is, frankly, one of the easiest top dial abilities to give a character. For 5 more points, you can play a complete Book of the Skull (which starts out giving one of your Hammer wielders Perplex) or a complete Power Plant (which may not grant Perplex specifically, but is still a damn good resource and grants a ton of powers on its own!). Comparing Entities to Resources isn’t exactly a 1 t0 1 comparison, but if I’m investing 25 points to boost one of my figures, I want a little more than just access to Perplex and +1 Damage (the usefulness of the stat modifiers depends so heavily on which figure you’re Possessing, but frankly, all of Proselyte’s starting stats suck except for Damage and Movement. Even its Range–just a 5–is really poor).

If you don’t want Perplex, your other choices are Plasticity (useful occasionally), Super Strength (half the figures who’d benefit from Super Strength already have it!) or Toughness (the worst damage absorption power). On Click 2, Proselyte picks up a mildly interesting Movement Special (CHANNEL THE LIGHT OF THE OTHER CORPS: Give Proselyte a free action and choose a color that isn’t brown, black, grey or pink. Proselyte can use a standard power of the chosen color until your next turn.), but it’s not until you get to Click 3 and Proselyte’s Damage Special (HEART OF COMPASSION: Friendly figures that can use Support may do so even if an opposing figure is adjacent to the friendly figure or the target. When they do modify the result of the 2d6 roll by +2 and don’t subtract 2 from the d6 roll.) that you start to see what the developers intended for this piece: Healing.

But even this epiphany raises as many questions as it answers. First, Proselyte does not have a native Support power (look again–his Special reads “friendly figures that CAN USE SUPPORT… “); you can give the Possessed character Support with Channel the Light of the Other Corps BUT THEN YOU CAN’T USE HEART OF COMPASSION! It’s a Catch 22, which leaves you with just two choices that I can think of to remedy the situation.

First, you can play A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SUPPORT-POSSESSING FIGURE TO BE YOUR HEALER. This is the easiest way to go, although it’s also the most points-intensive way to go, since it involves adding a whole other figure to your force than you may have wished to field (and at this point you can almost throw Theme out the window, unless you want to pay ANOTHER 25 points for ANOTHER Entity to possess the healer you just added to your team, and dammit, before you know it, it’s Turtles all the way down).

Your second choice is to play Proselyte on a figure who already has Support. Easy enough, right? Nope–you have to make sure that the base figure has Support ON CLICK 3! Top dial or even second Click Support does you no good if you want to boost it with Heart of Compassion.

I mean, I suppose Proselyte is useful in supercharging a medic piece in a 400+ point game as long as you’re fielding a bunch of $100+ Entities; outside of that specific circumstance, I have to say, as Entities go, Proselyte is by far the worst.

GRADE: 1 and 1/2 Oxygen Filtration Masks

CURRENT VALUE ON EBAY: $103.50 to $149.99 (I’m not Nostradamus, but I guarantee you this will come down. You can practically get Parallax for $150. If you have a Proselyte and are thinking of selling, now would be the time, buckaroo!)

 

Butcher Entity

8. WOL066P ButcherRed Lantern Corps Entity: The Red Lantern Entity has a top dial 5 Damage and 12 Attack Value, so right off the bat there will probably be a decent stat buff for most characters there. But he’s number 8 on this list because he offers almost nothing in terms of selectable powers–especially in the beginning. Butcher is one of the only Entities who doesn’t offer a power in all four slots top dial.

He starts off with Charge, Toughness and a Damage Special (HEAT OF RAGE: Once per turn, a friendly character may reroll the d6 roll for Blades/Claws/Fangs.) that really only works if you’ve built a whole team of B/C/F’ers. And if you’ve built a team of close combatants, I’m guessing most will already come equipped with Charge and/or Toughness (at least), so his Damage Special almost by default becomes the only power worth taking. I know there are some Red Lanterns out there with B/C/F, so army construction is key when using a piece like Butcher.

If you possess a character with a long dial (and/or if you have him possess the Rookie dial of a piece), Butcher starts to shine a little, offering Flurry, B/C/F, Combat Reflexes and Exploit Weakness. Unfortunately, you have to get to, like, click 9 for most of those powers to show up.

Butcher’s better than Proselyte, but that’s damning with faint praise.

GRADE: 2 Oxygen Filtration Masks

CURRENT VALUE ON EBAY: $125-$185 (Again, I don’t think the Butcher is sustainable around that level, so I’d recommend trading him for a more useful Entity or selling him!)

7. WOL068P PredatorStar Sapphires Entity: Now we are starting to get into the truly useful Entities. Stats-wise, Predator’s top dial is top notch, offering (among other numbers) 10 Range, 18 Defense and 4 Damage. Most characters you’ll want to play with Predator should be able to buff ONE of those stats. And while Predator doesn’t offer any Specials at the beginning, it does give you the option of picking from 4 powers, all of them useful: Sidestep, Energy Explosion, Energy Shield/Deflection or Shape Change.

Further down Predator’s dial comes a Click 4 Movement Special (COSMIC LOVE: Predator can use Shape Change, the Quintessence and Mystics team ability.), and Click 6 brings a truly bonkers Damage Special (POWER OF LOVE: All characters within range can use Mind Control.), which is great if you’re trying to create mass chaos during endgame scenarios.

Predator is not as game-changing as some of the other Entities, but it offers solid options in every slot and is definitely worth the 25 points it takes to field it. Predator is also a great choice if you’re putting together a Meta team and need that second or third Entity to form a Theme Team.

GRADE: 3 Oxygen Filtration Masks

CURRENT VALUE ON EBAY: $150-$199 (All of these Wave 2 Entities will depreciate slightly, but I expect Predator to hold its value AT LEAST as well as Butcher and Proselyte)

6. WOL061P EntityWhite Lantern Corps Entity: Top dial, Entity’s stats aren’t overwhelming; 8 Range, 10 Movement, 18 Defense and 4 Damage should let you pump up something. But Entity offers a couple EXTREMELY useful powers on Click 1. Probability Control is one of the best powers in the game, and Entity’s Movement Special (FLOW OF LIFE: At the beginning of your turn, you may heal one adjacent character without the Black Lantern Corps keyword 1 click.) is extraordinary in its ability to heal without a die roll. Sorta like Forge’s mechanical healing ability, but it works on everyone (well, everyone who’s not a Black Lantern).

Also of interest are Clicks 4 and 8, which grant a Special Stop Click (COSMIC LIFE: Entity can use Regeneration and the Quintessence team ability. When turning the dial, if this click is revealed due to damage taken from an opponent’s attack, stop turning the dial. This power can’t be ignored.). Unfortunately, the Stop part of the Stop Click won’t really do you any good, but being able to pick up Regeneration on Click 4 just might save the day. The fact that you ignore pushing damage and become un-Outwittable on the Click is also a bonus.

And, at the end of the day, Entity IS the White Lantern Entity, which really makes him a must play for White Lantern teams (that is, as with all of these pieces, assuming that you ever GET one, of course).

GRADE: 3 and 1/2 Oxygen Filtration Masks

CURRENT VALUE ON EBAY: $71-$130 (He may come down a little bit, at least until someone finds some way to completely abuse his healing power.)

5. WOL067P AdaraBlue Lantern Corps Entity: The ultimate support Entity! Top dial, Adara gives a character your choice of Telekinesis, Defend (with an 18 Defense that goes to 19 on the second Click) or Probability Control. Basically, with Adara, you get access to the full Scarlet.

Scarlet Witch AvX

Okay, sorry about that. My editor was a little quick on the “Scarlet” trigger there. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah–so Adara basically turns any eligible character you want in FFCW006 Scarlet Witch. Only for 25 points instead of 75. And you get Adara’s neat little Defend trick on top of everything else (which has already been put to Meta use in many recent ROC’s by having Adara Possess Despotellis). Adara’s early placement and defense shenanigans give way mid-dial to a Special Attack power (SURGE OF HOPE: Friendly characters who can use Empower or Enhancement treat other friendly characters within 3 squares and line of fire of that character as adjacent for the purposes of those powers.) that starts pumping up your team’s offensive capabilities too.

Adara’s only negative–and it’s really only a negative when compared to the other Entities–is that her best Special (COSMIC HOPE: Adora can use Perplex, but only to increase combat values. Adora can use the Quintessence team ability.) doesn’t show up until Click 7. Otherwise, Adara is a proven commodity that can boost the effectiveness of just about any character.

GRADE: 4 and 1/2 Oxygen Filtration Masks

CURRENT VALUE ON EBAY: $71.00 + (Despite Adara’s ROC success, the price tag has not moved much. Your guess is as good as mine, but if you’re saving up for an Entity, Adara for somewhere around $70-$90 certainly seems to make A LOT more sense than, say, $150 for Proselyte or $185 for Butcher.)

4. WOL060P Black HandBlack Lantern Corps Entity: What?! An Entity that’s not a Chase? Sweet! Finally! Now I don’t have to pay $80 just to–what? He’s already going for like $120? Sigh…

Anyway, Black Hand here offers four great powers at the top of his dial for you to choose from. Got a big hitter who’s stuck with, say, no move-and-attack? Black Hand can give him Running Shot. Do you have a ranged attacker you like who just has Pulse Wave even though you need to reach out and touch someone with a full range attack? Black Hand can grant Penetrating/Psychic Blast! Hard to hit piece that has Super Senses or ES/D but no dampeners? Yup, Black Hand can enable Invulnerability. Or, if you’re just trying to counterattack after your opponent misses, try Black Hand’s Damage Special (DESPAIR OF THE BLACKEST NIGHT: When an opposing character misses an attack, choose an opposing character within 10 squares and line of fire and modify that character’s defense value by -1 until the end of your next turn.) on for size.

On his second Click (and every even Click thereafter), Black Hand turns into a Black Lantern Corps enabler. His Movement (OBLIVION OF DEATH: When a friendly character with the Black Lantern Corps keyword is healed because an opposing character is KO’d, increase the healing by 1.) and Attack (DEATH: Black Hand can use Steal Energy. When an opposing character is KO’d, heal Black Hand of 1 damage.) Specials puts the swarming and healing capabilities of every Black Lantern into overdrive. You can really start to turn the tide of a game when your entire army heals 2 Clicks every time you KO an opposing figure (“Okay, I just took out one of your Warbot POG’s, and I have four Black Lanterns, so that kill will net me… 8 clicks of healing! And, every character I have is back to top dial!“).

The final thing that must be noted about Black Hand: He himself can be Possessed! He’s the only Entity that doesn’t have the Giant Damage Symbol, so you can run him as a normal figure and have another Entity Possess him! None of the other Entities can do that. And with 10 Clicks of life, Black Hand can definitely get the most out of a Possessor’s dial!

Ophidian

3. WOL063P OphidianOrange Lantern Corps Entity: And now we’re closing in on the best of the best. Top dial, Ophidian can grant you your choice of: Sidestep; Pulse Wave; Invulnerability; or a sick version of Outwit (DESIRE OF GREED: Ophidian can use Outwit. When it does it can use the countered power or ability for as long as it’s countered.). Click 2 brings (COSMIC GREED: Ophidian can use Barrier, Plasticity, and the Quintessence team ability.) and Shape Change (Shape Change! Good Lord, I love Shape Change. I have a Larfleeze because of the Shape Change Ophidian granted my Red Lantern Superboy Prime–y’know what? When you get closer to the mid-dial, Ophidian also offers Hypersonic Speed. If you don’t know why that’s good, this may not be the blog for you! At the end of the day, Ophidian is another Entity who’s ROC-certified. Like DJ Khaled, all he does is win!

GRADE: 4 and 1/2 Oxygen Filtration Masks!

2. WOL062P IonGreen Lantern Corps Entity: So, looking back over this list, I’ve been pretty critical of most of the Wave 2 Entities. But I can’t complain about Ion. Ion’s third Trait (and I think he’s the only Entity with 3 Traits, by the way) is, in a word, prettyf@#$ingsick (I AM ION, INCARNATION OF THE CORPS: Characters using the Possessed ability while Ion is the Possessor may choose to modify 2 combat values from Ion instead of 1 and may use 2 powers from Ion instead of 1.).

His combat values are a bit depressed compared to the rest of the Entities; that’s about his only downside, but you can kind of fix that with character choice; a lot of folks tend to pick the biggest and best character they can find and throw an Entity on it. But with Ion especially, you really want a character who will benefit from the double stat boost even before you start looking at the powers Ion can grant.

On Click 2, Ion also gains a Movement Special (FORCE OF WILL: Friendly characters can use Willpower. If they can already do so, increase their defense value by the number of action tokens on them.) that could be extremely useful, especially if you’ve constructed a team with this in mind.

But it all comes back to Ion’s Trait; it’s so powerful that you wonder how it can cost the same 25 points as the others.

GRADE: 5 Oxygen Filtration Masks

CURRENT VALUE ON EBAY: $280 and climbing. (Good Gosh!!)

1. WOL065P Parallax Sinestro Corps Entity: So, one way to evaluate the Entities that I haven’t really touched on is to look at their point values. Each one cost 25 points to use, but they all grant access to different point level dials. Parallax here has the most expensive dial at 250. That’s means Parallax gives you access to a dial that costs 100 freaking points more than Entity’s dial. And access to either dial COSTS THE SAME AMOUNT OF POINTS!

Top dial is where Parallax shines the most. He grants your choice of: Stealth; Penetrating/Psychic Blast; Impervious or the ridiculously good Damage Special (COSMIC FEAR: Parallax can use Perplex, but only to decrease combat values. Parallax can use the Quintessence team ability.). That’s right–you can give a character top dial Quintessence. Just stupid. And if you can get Parallax to his second click, he’ll grant access to Hypersonic Speed too (just like Ophidian).

Out of all of the Entities, Parallax is the one you should chasing. Or CHASE’n, as the case may be. In Wave 1 (or any Wave, for that matter) you cannot and will not pull a better figure.
