The Best Modern Day Duo Figures… Or, The Sixth Night of Clix-Mas 2020!!

[EDITOR’S NOTEWelcome back to the 12 Nights of Clix-Mas 2020! For Night One’s announcement trailer, click here. We built an Excalibur Themed Team with some new pieces on Night 2; Ninwashui finally released his SVC Top Ten on Night 3; he came back to talk Watchlist results on Night 4; and he came back once more to build an Apocalypse Prime army on Night 5!]

Y’know, back in the day (circa like 2012-2014-ish), some of my favorite figures to collect and play were Duo pieces that represented a sort-of team-up between two characters within one dial. My all-time favorites were probably Sentry and Void (which, actually, wasn’t TECHNICALLY a Duo fig, but whatever) from Chaos War and Captain America and Black Widow from the epic Captain America and the Winter Soldier Movie Set.

But a few years ago, Wizkids phased out the DUO symbol; no more Duos for us, it seemed…

[And no, I’m not talking about dial flipper pairs like Power Man & Iron Fist or Hawkman & Hawkgirl.]

And yet…

Over the last two years, a new sort of Duo figure paradigm has emerged. Instead of two heroes (Iron Man and War Machine) or two villains (Lex Luthor and Joker) or some mix thereof (Professor X and Magneto) plastered onto one dial, Wizkids has started taking prominent characters from the comics and given them one of their supporting (sidekick; pet; kid; sibling; love interest; TMZ; you get the idea…) characters as a Bystander Token!

And now, these pieces have started to take over even the Meta!

So let’s count down the 10 best pieces in Modern that generate Bystander Tokens!

Wait, are we living in Earth X right now?

10. EAX056 Iron Man (w/ Iron Avengers):

Okay, we’re starting with a bit of a cheat here, since Iron Man actually comes packing an entire Bystander Avengers, but this is one of the best Bystander generators they’ve ever made, helped in particular by a Map which was specifically made for him!

9. ABPI 041a Falcon (w/ Redwing):

Redwing brings Hypersonic Speed, Precision Strike, Super Senses, a Resurrection Trait (VAMPIRIC BIRD: Once per game, when Redwing would be KO’d, instead it isn’t. Protected: Pulse Wave.).

But to make this list, there needs to be some synergy between the Clix itself and the Pog it generates; well, Redwing’s second Trait (ALWAYS BY OUR SIDE: At the beginning of your turn, roll a d6. [4-6]: Remove an action token from a friendly adjacent character named Falcon or Captain America.) ensures a 50% chance to bring just that!

8. F4037 Dr. Fantastic (w/ Franklin Galactus):

Franklin Galactus is one of the most powerful tokens Wizkids has ever published; 10 Range, 12 Attack with Pulse Wave and a native 5 Damage.

The only reason this doesn’t end up higher is because Dr. Fantastic can’t generate him until the end of his dial.

7. HX055 Kate Pryde (w/ Lockheed):

Another Lockheed!! This version brings Energy Explosion and Perplex!! Perfectly complements Kate’s Probability Control and Precision Strike!

6. F4049 The Thing (w/ Chuck and Buzz):

What a design! This version of The Thing is actually a 4-click supporting character! And both of his sons are efficient close attackers; each of them are capable of serious damage when Thing uses his Empower with them!

5. F4047A Silver Surfer (w/ Dawn Greenwood):

Okay, first of all, this Surfer is practically Meta-Worthy. Next, Dawn Greenwood has the potential to completely enhance him. She can pull him to her from across the Map; she has both Enhancement and Perplex, although the latter only works on Surfer; and if your opponent bothers to KO her, all of Surfer’s stats get +1 for the rest of the game!

4. HX003 Bishop (w/ Shard):

Bishop on his own is good. But he also generates his sister Shard, who gives all friendly characters a “Behind the Scenes” type of Trait where they can’t be targeted unless their opponent is within 4 squares!

3. SVC014 Mary Jane Watson (w/ Paparazzi):

Mary Jane has turned up on so many WINNING teams of late you’d think she was the main attraction of SVC.

She can use her star power to generate up to three Paparazzi tokens who are all Autonomous and all have the power to Incapacitate your opponent’s best figures.

2. CAAV054 Captain Marvel (w/ Chewie):

Chewie is a Bystander Token that Carol generates for free whenever she wants. Chewie has Flurry, Plasticity, B/C/F AND Perplex. You literally cannot get more than that on a free Bystander Token. If your rolls are lucky enough, your 0 point Bystander here can deal up to 12 damage a turn!!

  1. ABPI074 Thanos (w/ Skreet):

Thanos is an awesome Meta-worthy piece. Skreet, his Bystander Token, has the best Perplex in the game. Plus she can deal Penetrating Damage on her own too.

Sometimes, it’s not that complicated…

What are your favorite Bystander Tokens? Sound off in the Comments below!

Night 7 drops tomorrow!

The Ghost of Clix-Mas Future Presents: Welcome to 2020!! (Or, The Sixth Night of Clix-Mas 2019!!)

[EDITOR’S NOTEWelcome to Night Five of the 12 Nights of Clix-Mas 2019!! First, we reviewed the ground rules; for Night 2, we hit the ground running with an in-depth review of Call-In Cards from friend of the blog, Roberto Ty! Night Three brought us HypeFox’s look at the 10 best Chases of the year. And then we had a rare holiday appearance from writer/co-founder of the blog Ninwashui. It’s a Clix-Mas Miracle!! Yesterday, we talked about the Five Things Wizkids Did Right This Year!]

Iron Man 2020

Sigh… I remember the 80’s, when Iron Man 2020 seemed so far away…

Happy Clix-Mas everyone!

Early December brought us a flurry of new release announcements, so tonight, we’re going to take a brief look at everything we know is coming in 2020 (so far, that is… )!!

JANUARY 2020:

DC GA And JSA.jpg

Just one release in January, and it’s the DC Heroclix: The Green Arrow and the Justice Society Monthly OP Kit, which will give us a new LE Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wildcat (Those appear to be the Joker’s Wild sculpts for Green Arrow and Wildcat, which makes Black Canary your new sculpt)!

ESTIMATED IN-SHOP DATE: January 29th, 2020!

FEBRUARY 2020:

Very busy month! This is when Heroclix in 2020 will fully kick into gear!

First off, we have…

marvel-heroclix-fantastic-four-cosmic-clash-figures

Marvel Heroclix: Fantastic Four: Cosmic Clash Starter Set!!

The Rock Finally

… the Fantastic Four have COME BACK… to Heroclix!!

Now that the Disney/Fox merger is complete, Wizkids apparently finally got the go-ahead to start printing more Fantastic Four Clix! Rather than making us wait for a specific set 5-figure booster set (which I’m sure is also probably being planned), they’ve sped out this new 6-figure Starter Set, and it looks gorgeous!

ESTIMATED IN-SHOP DATE: First week of February, 2020!

Cap and the Avengers

Marvel Heroclix: Captain America and the Avengers!!

We’re getting the 5-figure booster set, a Fast Forces and a Dice & Token Pack! Plus a release day OP kit featuring some kind of Baron Zemo piece.

ESTIMATED IN-SHOP DATE: First week of February, 2020!

Queen Mera OP Kit

And lastly, we’re getting the DC Heroclix: Queen Mera and the Atlantis Civil War OP Kit, which brings us King Trench, Mera and an Atlantean General (that King Trench sculpt looks a lil different than the Trinity War Trench pieces we got, so I’m assuming that’s the new sculpt. Mera and the Atlantean General sculpts both look like they were recycled from Trinity War, although one of Mera’s arms is in a different position, so who really knows?)!

ESTIMATED IN-SHOP DATE: February 26th, 2020!

MARCH 2020:

Bats and Cats.jpg

DC Heroclix: Batman and Catwoman: Everyone Loves Ivy Monthly OP Kit!

Looks like Catwoman is the new sculpt there.

ESTIMATED IN-SHOP DATE: Last week of March, 2020!

Marvel Deep Cuts.jpg

Marvel Heroclix: Deep Cuts Unpainted Minatures!!

All of the Regenesis pieces from last year are getting new, unpainted Switchclix dials that you can paint at home!

APRIL 2020:

Black Widow Movie.png

Black Widow Movie Set!!

Yes!! I’m a huge fan of the MCU Heroclix sets, and after we didn’t get any Infinity War or Endgame clix, I was worried that Wizkids had somehow lost interest in movie Clix! So for me, this is an extremely welcome announcement (now go back and get me a Chase MCU Thanos please, Wizkids! Or a Con LE. SOMETHING!!)!

Plus, we’re also getting a MCU Black Widow and her Motorcycle special release as well!

ESTIMATED IN-SHOP DATE: Early April, 2020! (For both)

dc-heroclix-justice-league-unlimited-booster-brick-10.jpg

DC Heroclix: Justice League Unlimited!!

One of the most beloved cartoons of all time comes to Heroclix in April! Hot off the heels of the success of 2018’s Batman: The Animated Series release, JLU should take animated Clix to the next level. Expect this one to be really popular! Just like with every other set, we’re gonna get a Starter Set, Dice & Token Pack and a Hawkgirl Release Day OP Kit!

ESTIMATED IN-SHOP DATE: April 2020!

AND… BEYOND:

We also have seen recent a recent fan event announcement for Spiderman/Venom: Absolute Carnage. I haven’t seen this confirmed anywhere else, but it would make sense since Spidey is still in the MCU and the latest Spidey set has already rotated out.

Okay! So that’s all I have for tonight? Which announced 2020 Heroclix release has you the most excited? Sound off in the Comments below!

And come right back here for more content tomorrow as we continue the 12 Nights of Clix-mas!!

The Ghost of Christmas Future Is Back for More Irresponsible Speculation!! (Or, The Sixth Night of Clix-Mas 2017!!)

Christmas Future 3.jpg

[EDITOR’S NOTEWelcome to Clix-Mas 2017, wherein we here at Critical Missives rather foolishly try to provide you with twelve different articles in twelve days, all brought to you by either the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, or the Ghost of Christmas Future! If you need to catch up with our intro to all of this, the first Night of Clix-Mas 2017 can be found right here! And we announced a new Holiday Scenario for our local venue on Night Two! And the Ghost of Christmas Past named a few of his favorite things from the past Clix year right here! On Night Four, the Ghost of Christmas Present left us his Top Ten Figures from Star Trek: Away Team!! And yesterday, the Ghost of Christmas Future gifted us some Irresponsible Speculation about IndyClix!!]

Welcome back! It’s Night Six of The Twelve Nights of Clix-Mas, and we’re continuing yesterday’s Irresponsible Speculation by pondering which non-Marvel, non-DC licensed properties out there would make a great Heroclix expansion!

As always, we’ll start with the obvious…

Transformers Heroclix

TRANSFORMERS:

Why It’d Work:

Giant robots in disguise? Hell yeah!

A Heroclix set based on the 80’s cartoon and toy line would kick serious butt. It would also tick all the boxes on the unofficial “Heroclix Licensed Property Checklist.”

–Property with large awareness and appeal to target audience;

–Long roster of BOTH heroes and villains from which to pull figures from;

–Plenty of characters with powers/abilities that would be easily adapted to the Heroclix format;

In fact, this is such a no-brainer THAT IT’S ALREADY BEEN DONE... sort of!

An amateur creator going by the handle “geekgirl137” actually created a whole Transformers Heroclix set and sent two bricks of it to the folks at HyperRPG’s “Indomitable” show! Check it out!

Will We Ever See It?

I’m inclined to say no, for three reasons.

First, I have no idea how much the Transformers license would be, but I’m guessing it might cost more than some of the other licensed properties out there. Also, part of the core business of Transformers is selling action figures, which isn’t in the same category as Heroclix, but isn’t that different at the end of the day.

Also, from a design standpoint, virtually every piece in the set would have the Robot keyword, which could technically lead to Themed Teams of figures that have no business being Themed together.

Finally, these characters are, for the most part, giant robots. Dramatizing that as an actual 3D sculpt that doesn’t look ridiculous next to normal Marvel and DC Clix yet still fits in a Gravity Feed or five figure Booster Pack is definitely going to be a logistical challenge.

GI Joe CLix.jpg

G.I. Joe:

Why It’d Work:

The G.I. Joe universe is practically as close as one can get to Marvel or DC without actually being them. Plenty of great, colorful heroes and villains to bring into Heroclix, all with distinct abilities (read: power sets), iconic costumes and cool codenames. Duke, Flint, Gung Ho, Snake Eyes, Quick Kick, Scarlet, The Baroness, Destro, Cobra Commander… this set practically designs itself!

Will We Ever See It?

Look, we’ve gotten the Turtles already. One could argue that this would be the next logical step! While I doubt there’s anything in the works, I could definitely see this happening at some point.

Stranger Things.jpeg

STRANGER THINGS:

Why It’d Work:

Because it’s a hot, modern property!

Stranger Things doesn’t have the breadth of content that the previous two entries on this list have, but it certainly has enough to fill out, say, an 18 piece Gravity Feed set and a Starter.

If nothing else, this set would give us a great Map or two!

Will We Ever See It?

This would be really out of the box thinking. The folks in charge of Stranger Things have been licensing the bejeezus out of the property recently, but I don’t think this would interest Wizkids. Usually, when we see an unexpected property adapted in Heroclix, it’s a film (Kick-Ass 2, Pacific Rim), not a television series. Star Trek: Away Team is kind of an outlier in this regard.

Agree? Disagree? What properties would YOU like to see adapted by Wizkids? And would you like to see an expanded version of this article at a future date? Sound off in the comments below.

And don’t forget to come back tomorrow for more Clix-Mas goodness!!

Should Everything Old Be New Again? Part 2!! (Or, Theory Crafting a Marvel Core Set!!) (Or, The Sixth Night of Clix-Mas!!)

[EDITOR’S NOTE: Once again (and this time, with feeling!), we are shamelessly unleashing the 12 Nights of Clix-Mas! Tonight is Night 5! If you missed The First Night of Clix-Mas, you can read what it’s all about right here! Night 2 was the nascent edition of a new holiday scenario we’ve been cooking up and can be found… here-ish! Night 3 took a brief look back at Horrorclix. Night 4 was the debut of a new feature called “Overlooked” which examined some pieces from World’s Finest that don’t see quite as much play as they seemingly should… . And Night 5 was Part 1 of a brief 3-part series that examines how Heroclix would look if there were a Core Set released every year or two… ]

speed-demon

Okay! Yesterday, we talked about what a Core Set is and why Heroclix could use one. Today, I’m gonna put together a mock Core Set for Marvel Heroclix to see what the concept would look like in action!

Here’s how I’m gonna put it together!

–The set would be distributed via 5-figure Booster packs, with 10 Packs equaling a Brick, and 2 Bricks equaling a Case (no change from a normal expansion).

–The set would contain 70 figures; 16 Commons + 1 Prime; 16 Uncommons + 1 Prime; 16 Rares + 1 Prime; 12 Super Rares + 1 Prime; and 6 Chases.

–All figures would be reprints EXCEPT the Primes and the Chases. The reprints would primarily come from all the Marvel sets that rotated out of Modern from the previous year (with the exception of certain “Micro Sets” like the Movie tie-in Sets and Fast Forces, although regular set Gravity Feeds should be fair game) with just a few older pieces. So, for this Core Set, we’d mostly be choosing pieces from Wolverine and the X-Men, Invincible Iron Man, Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy, with just a few exceptions.

–With the Primes and Chases, I would try to add to or even finish Sub-Themes from the rotated sets so that the new pieces fit right in with the reprints.

–Some figures might change rarity. I would make a rule that nothing can move up in rarity (for example, I would never let an Uncommon in a prior set suddenly become a Rare in the Core Set), but figures can move down a tier (a Rare in, say, GOTG could thus become an Uncommon in the Core Set).

Okay! So what would my Marvel 2017 Core Set look like? I’m glad you asked! I present to you…

THE THEORETICAL 2017 MARVEL HEROCLIX CORE SET!!

COMMONS:

thule-society-priest

MC17001 Thule Society Priest (formally FI001)(Meet one of the exceptions! This guy comes from Fear Itself, obviously, but he was a well-designed, well-balanced piece that deserves to come back for a year!)

MC17002 Rescue (formally IIM002)

MC17003 Mantis (formally GOTG003)

MC17004 Secret Empire Number 9 (formally DP204)

MC17005 U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M. Soldier (formally DP005)

MC17006 Dreadnought (formally IIM006)

Weapon X Scientist.jpg

MC17007A Weapon X Scientist (formally DP007A)

MC17007B William Stryker (Our first new piece, this would brind Stryker into the Modern Age–he was last seen years ago in Giant-Size X-Men. Given how many mutants will be running around in 2017, we probably need more X-Men villains and, after all of his X-Men movie franchise appearances, Stryker is one of the most well-known X-Men villains.

MC17008 Colleen Wing (formally DP008)

MC17009 Misty Knight (formally DP009)

MC17010 Lady Deathstrike (formally WXM210)

MC17011 Justin Hammer (formally IIM008)

MC17012 Tana Nile (formally GOTG012B)

MC17019 Captain Marvel (formally GOTG207)

MC17020 Weasel (formally DP020)

MC17021 Flatman (formally WXM021)

MC17022 Talon (formally GOTG022)

black-cat

MC17023A Black Cat (formally DP023)

MC17023B Mink (Another new figure, both for this set and for Heroclix, Mink hails from Mark Gruenwald’s wonderful Squadron Supreme run. Although she wouldn’t have the Squadron Supreme keyword herself, I could imagine her having a Trait that would keep her from breaking Theme as long as she was on a force with a character named Nighthawk. Which should be possible with the Squadron Supreme of Earth-712 ATA, once Mink’s Trait was worded properly.)

MC17024 Number One (formally DP024)

MC17025 Flag-Smasher (formally DP025)

MC17026 Crystal (formally GOTG026)

MC17027 Piledriver (formally IIM027)

MC17028 Ebony Maw (formally GOTG025)

MC17029 War Machine (formally IIM029A–was a Rare, now Uncommon)

MC17030 Star-Lord (formally GOTG030)

MC17031 Gambit (formally WXM031–was a Rare, now Uncommon)

MC17032 Punisher (formally DP032)

RARES:

MC17033 Forge (formally WXM033)

MC17034 Legion (formally WXM038)

MC17035 Killraven (formally GOTG035)

MC17036 Bullseye (formally DP036)

MC17037 Iron Monger 2.0 (formally IIM037)

MC17038 Maximus (formally GOTG 038)

MC17039 Big Bertha (formally WXM039)

MC17040 Thunderball (formally IIM039)

MC17041 Deathurge (formally GOTG041)

MC17042 Grasshopper (formally DP042)

MC17043 Black Bolt (formally GOTG036)

MC17044 Silver Samurai (formally WXM044)

MC17045 Shriek (formally GOTG044)

MC17046 Black Dwarf (formally GOTG036)

thanos-rare

MC17047A Thanos (formally GOTG047A)

MC17047B Thanos (Another new piece, this would be our Rare Prime, and it’s… Marvel Zombies Thanos. Why he wasn’t made as a Chase piece in the original GOTG set, I don’t know. But we’ll fix that right here! He won’t be a SwitchClix, but he will have the Z-Virus keyword!)

MC17048 Supergiant (formally GOTG048)

SUPER RARES:

corvus-super-rare

MC17049 Corvus Glaive (formally GOTG049)

MC17050 Proxima Midnight (formally GOTG050)

nate-grey-super-rare-prime

MC17051A X-Man (formally WXM051)

MC17051B Nate Grey (The final new Prime for the set, this version of Nate would carry the Age of Apocalypse keyword and represent the character from when he debuted during the A0A event.)

MC17052 Wrecker (formally IIM050)

MC17053 Speed Demon (formally DP053A)

MC17054 Arnim Zola (formally DP054)

MC17055 Iron Man (formally GOTG055)

MC17056 Shaman (formally IIM40)

MC17057 Iron Doom (formally IIM042)

MC17058 Groot (formally GOTG051)

MC17059 Rocket Raccoon (formally GOTG052)

MC17060  Thane (formally GOTG060)

CHASES:

(For the Chases, there are just so many AoA characters who have either never been Clix’d, or else haven’t been Clix’d in YEARS. So I would finish the Core Set off with more AoA Chases!)

MC17061 Prelate Scott Summers (AoA version of Cyclops, missing an eye.)

MC17062 Jean Grey (AoA version.)

MC17063 Prelate Alex Summers (AoA version of Havok.)

MC17064 Dark Beast (AoA version of Beast.)

MC17065 Nemesis (AoA version of Genocide. Also known as Holocaust. Hasn’t been Clix’d since Giant-Size X-Men.)

MC17066 Apocalypse (AoA version, obviously. Sculpt would be similar in stature to Tyrant’s from GOTG.)

And there you have it. Now imagine a set like this being available all year long to be used with upcoming releases and tournaments! You would crack one of these and one pack of any current Marvel set–or even a new set during launch!

So do you like the idea of a Core Set yet? Sound off in the Comments below! And tune in tomorrow for a look a theoretical DC Core Set!
